Audi A4 allroad reliability: quattro estate buying guide

Audi A4 allroad reliability: quattro and ultra drivetrains, 2.0 and 3.0 TDI engines, S tronic and suspension checks, and where allroads sell best.

· 7 min read

Audi A4 allroad reliability is essentially the same as that of an A4 Avant quattro with the same engine and gearbox, plus a few extra checks for the raised suspension, body cladding and quattro drivetrain. The diesel allroads with the 2.0 or 3.0 TDI are the most common and the most durable. Allroads also sell for more in Alpine and snowy markets, which makes them good cross-border stock.

What is the A4 allroad and which generations exist?

The A4 allroad quattro is an A4 Avant with standard four-wheel drive, a raised ride height and plastic body cladding. It was sold in two generations: the B8 allroad from 2009 to 2016 and the B9 allroad from 2016 until the end of A4 production in 2024.

On the B9, Audi raised the ground clearance by 34 mm compared with the regular A4 Avant. Beyond that, the allroad uses the same platform, interior and most of the mechanical parts as the A4, so the known A4 issues apply to it. Our A4 reliability guide covers them in detail.

Audi A4 allroad reliability compared with a standard A4

The A4 allroad is not fundamentally more or less reliable than a standard A4; it shares its engines and gearboxes. In practice, allroads often fare slightly better as used cars because they were more often bought with diesel engines, quattro and higher specifications, and they avoid the weakest A4 gearbox.

Two points work in the allroad's favour:

  • No multitronic. The multitronic CVT, the A4's most troublesome gearbox, was only fitted to front-wheel-drive cars, so no allroad has one.
  • Mostly diesel. Most allroads were sold with the 2.0 or 3.0 TDI, which avoids the oil-consumption problems of early B8 TFSI petrols.

Points that work against it:

  • Extra weight and height. Suspension bushes, wheel bearings and tyres work harder, especially on cars that towed or drove on rough roads.
  • More drivetrain parts. The quattro system adds a centre differential or clutch, a propshaft and a rear differential, all of which can wear.

Which engines suit the allroad best?

The engines that suit the allroad best are the 2.0 TDI for most buyers and the 3.0 TDI for those who tow or want effortless performance. Petrol allroads are less common and harder to sell in many markets.

Engine Generation Gearbox Comment
2.0 TDI B8 Manual or S tronic Durable; check injectors, DPF, EGR
2.0 TDI (quattro ultra) B9 Manual or S tronic Efficient; AdBlue on most versions
3.0 TDI 218 hp B9 7-speed S tronic Strong engine; expensive to repair
3.0 TDI 272 hp B9 8-speed tiptronic Torque-converter automatic; good for towing
2.0 TFSI B8, B9 S tronic B8 Gen 2 engines can burn oil

The 2.0 TDI checks are covered in our A4 2.0 TDI reliability guide. The 3.0 TDI is a strong engine, but repairs to its injectors, turbo or timing chain cost much more than on the four-cylinder.

What should I check on the quattro drivetrain?

Check the quattro drivetrain for matched tyres, noises, fluid service and warning lights. Most quattro problems show up as noise or vibration and are cheaper to deal with if found early.

The B9 four-cylinder allroads use quattro with ultra technology, which normally drives the front wheels and connects the rear axle through a clutch when needed. The B8 and the B9 3.0 TDI use permanent quattro with a centre differential.

Checklist:

  1. Tyres. All four should be the same make, size and similar wear. Mismatched tyres strain centre differentials and clutches.
  2. Noises. Listen for whining from the rear differential, clunks when pulling away and humming from wheel bearings.
  3. Tight turns. On full lock at low speed, there should be no binding or juddering.
  4. Warning lights. Any drivetrain warning on an ultra system needs diagnosis; the clutch is controlled electronically.
  5. Fluids. Ask whether differential and gearbox oils have been changed, especially on high-mileage S tronic cars.
  6. Gearbox. On S tronic cars, check for smooth shifts and no judder. The seven-speed S tronic in many B8s has known mechatronic faults; see our S tronic gearbox guide.

Suspension, body and other allroad checks

Allroad-specific checks focus on the raised suspension, the body cladding and the signs of hard use. Many allroads have towed caravans or trailers and driven on snowy or gravel roads.

  • Suspension: worn bushes and dampers show as knocks and wallowing. Some cars have adaptive dampers, which are more expensive to replace.
  • Plastic cladding: check the wheel-arch and sill cladding for damage and loose clips. Replacement parts are model-specific.
  • Underbody: look for impact marks on the sump guard and exhaust.
  • Tow bar: a fitted tow bar suggests towing; check the clutch on manual cars and the gearbox on automatics.
  • Rust: road salt in winter markets can attack brake lines and underbody components.

Where in Europe do allroads sell for the most?

Allroads sell for the most in markets where four-wheel drive is valued: Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy and the Nordic countries. In flat markets such as the Netherlands and Belgium, buyers are less willing to pay extra for quattro and ground clearance.

MyCarDealer's listing data does not separate the allroad from other A4 versions, but the wider A4 market shows the Alpine premium. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, A4s of all versions from 2016–2021 had a median asking price of €19,980 in Austria (57 listings), €17,990 in Germany (1,093 listings) and €16,999 in Italy (510 listings). These figures cover all A4 versions, so check allroad prices in your target market directly before you buy for export.

A sourcing strategy that follows from this:

  1. Buy where supply is large, typically from German leasing returns and fleet auctions.
  2. Sell where four-wheel drive is valued, either in your own market or by targeting buyers in Alpine regions.
  3. Check registration taxes and costs before you plan an export. Austria, for example, charges NoVA on cars registered there for the first time; our NoVA guide explains how it works.

How to value an A4 allroad correctly

Value an A4 allroad against other allroads, not against A4 Avants, because the price difference between them can be significant. Many valuation tools average the two, which leads to wrong bids.

MyCarDealer looks for comparable cars of the same model, generation, engine and year in current listings in your country and calculates the margin after VAT, transport and preparation. Check the comparable cars it shows to make sure they are allroads, and adjust if the sample is small. You can try it with a free valuation.

Frequently asked questions

Audi A4 allroad reliability compared with a standard A4

Not fundamentally, because it shares engines and gearboxes with the A4. However, allroads never had the multitronic CVT and are mostly diesels, so they avoid two of the A4's weakest components.

Which engines suit the allroad best?

The 2.0 TDI suits most buyers, and the 3.0 TDI suits those who tow or want more performance. Petrol allroads exist but are less common and harder to sell in many markets.

What should I check on the quattro drivetrain?

Check that all four tyres match, listen for differential and bearing noises, test for binding on full lock and look for warning lights. On S tronic cars, check gearbox shifts and service history.

Where in Europe do allroads sell for the most?

Allroads command the highest prices in Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy and the Nordic countries. Flat markets such as the Netherlands and Belgium usually pay less for quattro.

How much higher is the A4 allroad than a normal A4 Avant?

The B9 A4 allroad has 34 mm more ground clearance than the regular A4 Avant, along with plastic body cladding and standard quattro.
