BYD cars used: residual values and risks for dealers
BYD cars on the used market: Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal battery tech, parts and service network, price cuts and residual-value risk.
· 8 min read
Used BYD cars can be good stock for dealers, but only if you buy them below the level where the next new-car discount would hurt you. The Blade battery has a strong reputation and a long warranty, so technical risk is modest. The real risk is price: BYD cuts new prices and adds models quickly, and used values follow. Buy on current data and keep stock time short.
Who is BYD, and which BYD cars reach the used market?
BYD is a Chinese manufacturer based in Shenzhen that started as a battery maker and now builds electric and plug-in hybrid cars, buses and batteries. In Europe it sells both battery-electric cars and DM-i plug-in hybrids, and its range has grown quickly since the Atto 3 arrived in Germany in October 2022.
The BYD cars you see most often in used stock are:
| Model | Type | What dealers need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Atto 3 | Compact electric SUV | The first volume BYD in Europe; 49.9 or 60.5 kWh LFP Blade battery, 70–80 kW DC charging |
| Dolphin | Electric hatchback | Golf-sized, priced aggressively new, popular with private buyers |
| Seal | Electric saloon | Tesla Model 3 rival, higher price and smaller buyer pool |
| Seal U | Electric and DM-i plug-in SUV | Family SUV, sold as BEV and as a plug-in hybrid |
| Atto 2, Sealion 7 | Newer models | Small numbers used so far, values not settled |
The Atto 3 matters most because it has the longest history. In early 2026 BYD introduced the Atto 3 Evo in Europe with a 74.8 kWh battery and much faster charging, which will push down older Atto 3 values, as every new version does.
Is the BYD Blade battery durable?
The BYD Blade battery is an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, a chemistry known for long cycle life and good tolerance of regular charging to 100%. That is good news for used buyers, who worry most about battery wear.
BYD backs this with a long warranty. In Europe the whole vehicle is covered for 6 years or 150,000 km, and BYD extended the high-voltage battery warranty for its electric and plug-in hybrid cars to 8 years or 250,000 km in early 2026, up from 200,000 km. Check the exact terms for the car you are buying, including whether the higher mileage applies to cars sold before the change, and make sure the servicing record meets the warranty conditions.
LFP has one practical downside: the state of charge shown on the dashboard can drift if the car is never fully charged, so a short test drive tells you little about range. Ask for a battery health report rather than relying on the range estimate. Our EV battery health check guide covers the methods.

Request accessHow fast do BYD cars depreciate?
BYD cars depreciate quickly in their first two years, mainly because of new-car discounts, not because of faults. When a manufacturer cuts list prices, offers large registration bonuses or launches an improved version, every used example of that model drops with it.
According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices for used BYD cars in the European countries we follow were:
| Model | Years | Listings | Median price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atto 3 | 2023–2024 | 268 | €26,340 | 43,000 km |
| Dolphin | 2023–2025 | 115 | €25,500 | 15,750 km |
| Seal | 2023–2025 | 111 | €38,562 | 19,800 km |
| Seal U (BEV and DM-i) | 2024–2025 | 411 | €32,280 | 16,600 km |
The country spread is where it gets interesting. Dolphins had a median of €21,980 in Germany against €26,850 in the Netherlands. Atto 3 medians were €25,490 in Germany, €26,340 in the Netherlands and €27,490 in Belgium. For the Seal U, Italy (€29,900), Germany (€29,380) and Poland (€29,641) were well below Spain (€33,490), the Netherlands (€32,950), Belgium (€32,975), Czechia (€35,407) and Slovakia (€36,990).
Gaps of €3,000–7,000 for the same model are large enough to trade on, but check mileage, battery size and whether a Seal U is the electric or the plug-in version before you compare. Note also how low the median mileage is on the younger cars: many are pre-registered or nearly new cars, which compete directly with discounted new stock.
How do EU tariffs affect used BYD prices?
EU tariffs raise the cost of new BYD electric cars imported from China, which supports used values, but they do not apply to used cars already registered in the EU. Under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754, applicable from 30 October 2024, BYD-group battery-electric cars carry a countervailing duty of 17.0% on top of the standard 10% import duty. That is lower than the 35.3% rate for SAIC (MG) and the 20.7% for other cooperating manufacturers.
Three consequences for dealers:
- The duties cover battery-electric cars only. BYD's DM-i plug-in hybrids are not subject to them, which is one reason BYD pushed plug-ins harder in Europe.
- BYD's rate is the lowest of the large Chinese groups, and its new-car pricing in Europe has stayed aggressive. Do not expect tariffs alone to lift used values.
- European production will change the picture again. BYD is setting up a plant in Hungary, and cars built inside the EU are not imported from China. Keep an eye on which BYD models move to local production.
Parts, service network and buyer trust
The weakest point of BYD for a used-car dealer is not the car but the network. BYD's dealer and service network in Europe has grown quickly but is still thinner than that of Volkswagen, Kia or Toyota, and it varies a lot by country. Buyers ask two questions: where can I get it serviced, and how long will parts take?
Before you stock BYD cars, check:
- Nearest authorised BYD workshop to your customers and how they handle warranty work for cars they did not sell.
- Body parts availability, especially headlights, bumpers and glass, which decide how long a lightly damaged car stands.
- Software update route, over the air or workshop only.
- Charging cable and accessories, which are often missing on used cars and cost more than buyers expect.
Buyer trust is improving. Many private buyers no longer see "Chinese" as a negative, but older buyers and buyers in rural areas remain more sceptical. Expect a BYD to sell faster in city markets than in the countryside.
Are used BYD cars a good buy for dealers?
Used BYD cars are a good buy for dealers when the purchase price leaves room for one more new-car price cut. The cars themselves are well equipped, the battery chemistry is robust and the warranty is long.
A practical buying approach:
- Value from current listings in your country, not from a book value set months ago.
- Compare with nearly new and pre-registered stock of the same model, because that is what your buyer will see.
- Prefer the bigger battery on the Atto 3 and Dolphin; it widens your buyer pool.
- Set a short target for days in stock and cut early if the car is not moving.
The maximum bid strategy is the same as for any car: work back from realistic retail price to the most you can pay. MyCarDealer does that from live listings in your market and shows where the same model sells for more; request access if you are a verified dealer. Frequently asked questions
Is BYD a Chinese company?
Yes. BYD is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and started as a battery manufacturer. It builds its own batteries, including the LFP Blade battery used in its European electric cars, and is setting up production in Europe.
What are the main BYD cars on the used market?
The Atto 3 compact SUV, the Dolphin hatchback, the Seal saloon and the Seal U SUV, which comes as both an electric car and a DM-i plug-in hybrid. Newer models such as the Atto 2 and Sealion 7 are still rare used.
How fast do BYD cars depreciate?
Quickly in the first two years, mainly because of new-car discounts and new versions. In October 2026, used Atto 3s from 2023–2024 had a median asking price of €26,340 in the countries tracked by MyCarDealer.
Is the BYD Blade battery durable?
The Blade battery uses LFP chemistry, which is known for long cycle life. BYD covers the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 250,000 km in Europe, but check the warranty terms for the specific car and ask for a battery health report.
Do EU tariffs affect used BYD prices?
Only indirectly. The 17.0% countervailing duty on new BYD electric cars from China applies at import, not to used cars already registered in the EU. It supports new-car prices, but BYD's new-car pricing has stayed aggressive, so used values still follow new-car discounts.
