Import car from Poland: sourcing used cars in Poland
Import a car from Poland as an EU dealer: price levels, Polish documents, VAT invoices vs private sellers, the official history check and export transport.
· 7 min read
To import a car from Poland as an EU dealer, compare Polish prices with your market after adjusting for mileage, buy with a margin or VAT-qualifying invoice, check the car in Poland's official history service and collect the registration certificate before transport. Poland can be cheaper for some models, but many Polish cars are older imports, so history checks matter.
Are used cars cheaper in Poland than in Western Europe?
Polish asking prices are often lower than German ones for the same model and year, but much of the gap is mileage. Poland mainly imports cars rather than exporting them, so its stock is older and has covered more on average.
According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026:
| Model | Poland | Germany | Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla 2019–2022 | €15,762 (125 listings) | €17,900 (157) | €20,499 (273) |
| VW Tiguan 2019–2021 | €18,595 (66) | €22,000 (615) | €24,999 (373) |
| Audi Q5 2019–2021 | €24,597 (52) | €27,500 (152) | €33,495 (210) |
| BMW X3 2019–2021 | €24,970 (44) | €27,700 (173) | €33,000 (188) |
The Polish Corollas in that sample had a median of about 103,000 km against 77,000 km in Germany; Tiguans about 115,000 km against 100,000 km. Once you compare like with like, the saving narrows to a few hundred euros for many cars. Where Poland stands out is against markets with high registration tax, such as the Netherlands, but there the buyer's own tax will be added again on registration.
Two further points shape Polish prices:
- Excise is already in them. Every car first registered in Poland after import has paid excise of 3.1% (up to 2,000 cc) or 18.6% (above). When you buy a Polish-registered car, that tax is part of the price. Large-engine cars therefore rarely look cheap in Poland.
- Local origin is valued. Polish buyers pay more for cars first sold new in Poland with a documented history, because so much stock is imported. Those cars are usually the safest buys for export too.
Which documents come with a Polish registered car
A Polish-registered car should come with the registration certificate (dowód rejestracyjny), the purchase document and the technical inspection record. Make sure the seller is the registered owner or a dealer who can prove how it acquired the car.
- Dowód rejestracyjny – the Polish registration certificate, which your authority will withdraw on re-registration.
- Invoice (faktura) or sale contract (umowa kupna-sprzedaży) with VIN, price, date and both parties.
- Proof of the last technical inspection (badanie techniczne); the result is also recorded centrally.
- Certificate of conformity, if available, or the manufacturer's data for your registration.
- Service history and both keys.
If the car was imported into Poland, ask for the previous foreign documents or at least copies. They let you compare the mileage history across both countries. After the sale, the seller notifies the Polish registration office that the car has been sold.

Request accessHow to check the history of a Polish car
The official Polish service historiapojazdu.gov.pl gives free access to data from the central vehicle register. You need three pieces of information: the registration number, the VIN and the date of first registration.
The report shows the main technical data, registration events, the number of owners, the validity of the technical inspection and insurance, and odometer readings recorded at inspections. Two patterns deserve attention:
- Mileage that stops rising or falls between inspections.
- A first Polish registration a few years after the car was built. It is an import, so its earlier history sits in another country's records.
Tampering with an odometer is a criminal offence in Poland under art. 306a of the Criminal Code, punishable by imprisonment from three months to five years. That has reduced but not eliminated the practice, especially on cars imported years ago. Our guide to the car mileage check for imports shows how to combine registers, service records and the car itself, and car history check for imports covers damage, theft and finance checks.
VAT rules when buying from a Polish dealer
When you buy from a Polish VAT-registered dealer, the car is either sold under the margin scheme or invoiced as VAT-qualifying. The Polish standard VAT rate is 23%.
| Seller and car | Invoice | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer, margin car | Gross price, marked "procedura marży – towary używane" (art. 120 of the Polish VAT Act) | No VAT to reclaim or pay on arrival; resell under your margin scheme |
| Dealer, VAT-qualifying car | Net, 0% intra-Community supply to your EU VAT number | Account for VAT in your country and deduct it; resell with full VAT |
| Private seller | Sale contract, no VAT | No VAT on the purchase; resell under your margin scheme |
| Car under 6 months or ≤6,000 km | Net | VAT always due in your country as a new means of transport |
For a VAT-free intra-Community supply, the Polish dealer will check your VAT number in VIES and will need evidence that the car left Poland, typically a signed CMR note and your confirmation of receipt. The general rules are in VAT margin scheme EU rules for cross-border purchases.
Buying from private sellers
Private sellers offer the lowest prices and the highest risk: no VAT complication, but no dealer liability either, documents in the seller's name only, and a higher chance of undisclosed damage or mileage problems. Insist that the name in the dowód rejestracyjny matches the seller's ID and that the VIN in the papers matches the car in several places.
Transporting the car out of Poland
Most dealers collect Polish cars by truck. A Polish-registered car can sometimes be driven on its own plates while its registration and insurance are valid, but once ownership has passed to you, check with your insurer whether that cover still applies.
For several cars or long routes, a transporter is cheaper per car and adds no kilometres; car transport costs in Europe gives typical prices by route.
When it makes sense to import a car from Poland
Poland works as a sourcing market for specific cases:
- Cars first sold new in Poland with a full Polish service record, bought from dealers or fleets.
- Small-engine and hybrid models, where the excise in the price is small.
- Buyers in high-price markets such as the Netherlands or Scandinavia, where the price gap is large enough to absorb transport and local registration tax.
It rarely works for large-engine cars or for cars imported into Poland years ago with patchy records. Before bidding, check the price you could achieve at home. MyCarDealer finds cars across Europe and shows each car's market price in your country and the margin after VAT and transport; you can value one car for free.
Frequently asked questions
Are used cars cheaper in Poland than in Western Europe?
Asking prices are often lower, but Polish cars usually have higher mileage, so the gap narrows when you compare equivalent cars. Poland is cheapest against high-tax markets such as the Netherlands, less so against Germany.
Which documents come with a Polish registered car?
The registration certificate (dowód rejestracyjny), an invoice or sale contract, the technical inspection record, and ideally a CoC and service history. If the car was imported into Poland, ask for its previous foreign documents too.
How can I check the history of a Polish car?
Use the free official service historiapojazdu.gov.pl with the registration number, VIN and date of first registration. It shows inspection results with odometer readings, registration events, the number of owners and insurance status.
What are the VAT rules when buying from a Polish dealer?
A margin car is invoiced gross under the Polish margin scheme and you resell it under yours. A VAT-qualifying car is invoiced net as an intra-Community supply, and you account for VAT in your country. The Polish standard rate is 23%.
Is it safe to buy from private sellers in Poland?
It can be, but risk is higher: check that the seller is the registered owner, run the official history check and inspect the VIN. There is no VAT and no dealer liability, so price the risk in.
