Import car to Czech Republic: registration for dealers

Import a car to the Czech Republic: STK evidence check, registration documents, the CZK 800 fee, the emission fee for pre-Euro 3 cars, VAT and timing.

· 9 min read

To import a car to the Czech Republic from another EU state, the car passes an evidence check at an STK station (plus a roadworthiness test if older than four years), gets Czech insurance and is entered in the register at a municipal office. The registration fee is CZK 800; an emission fee of CZK 3,000–10,000 applies only below Euro 3. Simple cases take one day.

Who this matters to: selling into Czechia

The Czech Republic is a price-sensitive market for mass-market cars and a relatively expensive one for some premium models, so whether an import works depends on the segment.

According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices for 2019–2021 cars were:

Model (2019–2021) Czech Republic Germany Slovakia
Skoda Octavia €14,382 (632 listings) €16,500 (538) €14,999 (210)
VW Golf €14,099 (279) €16,900 (1,107) €15,990 (104)
Skoda Superb €18,791 (472) €19,499 (199) €18,790 (159)
BMW 5 Series €27,406 (255) €24,800 (337) €25,999 (47)
Mercedes-Benz C-Class €24,025 (162) €21,500 (578) –

Two different stories sit in that table. Czech Octavias are cheaper partly because they have covered more: the Czech median was about 149,000 km against about 114,000 km in Germany. A low-mileage German Octavia is a different product, not a cheaper one. Premium saloons are the opposite case: a 2019–2021 BMW 5 Series or C-Class was listed for €2,500–2,600 more in Czechia than in Germany, which is where a dealer importing into the Czech market has room for margin after transport.

The STK evidence check and roadworthiness test

Every imported used car must pass an evidence check (evidenční kontrola) at an STK station before it can be registered. The technician compares the VIN, engine and other identifiers with the foreign documents and records the mileage.

The rules come from Act No. 56/2001 Coll. on the conditions of operating vehicles on roads and Decree No. 343/2014 Coll. on vehicle registration. In practice:

  1. Car less than four years from first registration: the evidence check is enough. The register records when the first periodic test is due, counted from the first registration abroad.
  2. Car older than four years: you also need proof of a roadworthiness test. Either the car takes a Czech test (including emissions) or you present a valid periodic test certificate from another EU state, which Czech authorities recognise.
  3. Mileage: since 2018 STK stations compare odometer readings with earlier records. A car with an implausible reading fails, and the owner has to explain the difference.

Prices for the evidence check and the full test are set by each station, so budget a few hundred koruna for the check and a few thousand for a full test, and ask the station for its price list.

Documents needed to register a foreign car in Czechia

To register a foreign car in Czechia you need the foreign registration documents, proof of ownership, Czech insurance, the STK protocol and the application form. Missing ownership documents are the most common reason a registration stalls.

Document Source Note
ID card or passport; company extract for a business applicant A representative needs a power of attorney with an officially verified signature
Foreign registration certificate, all parts (e.g. German Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I and Teil II) seller Part II is the proof of title; do not buy without it
Certificate of conformity (CoC) seller or manufacturer Makes it easy to enter technical data
Invoice or purchase contract seller Proves acquisition
Green card (proof of liability insurance) Czech insurer Arranged by VIN before registration
Evidence check protocol, plus roadworthiness test if required STK station See the previous section
Application for entry in the vehicle register registry office Can be completed on site
Confirmation of VAT paid in Czechia tax office Only for a "new means of transport"

Offices may ask for an official translation of unusual foreign documents. A missing CoC is not fatal, but it is cheaper to order one before transport; our certificate of conformity guide explains how.

Fees: CZK 800 and the emission fee

Registering a passenger car costs an administrative fee of CZK 800 under Act No. 634/2004 Coll. on administrative fees. The other costs are the STK check, the insurance and, for very old cars only, the emission fee.

The emission fee (often called the "ecological tax") is regulated by Act No. 542/2020 Coll. It is paid once, at the first Czech registration of a used M1 or N1 vehicle that does not meet Euro 3:

Emission standard Emission fee
No emission standard CZK 10,000
Euro 1 CZK 5,000
Euro 2 CZK 3,000
Euro 3 or newer none

For a dealer trading cars from the last ten or fifteen years, the emission fee is irrelevant. It matters only for youngtimers, where the standard in the documents decides, not the model year. If the foreign papers do not state it, get a confirmation from the manufacturer before registration.

Czechia charges no registration tax based on CO2 or value. That makes it one of the cheapest EU countries in which to register a used import, unlike the Netherlands or Austria; our overview of car registration tax in Europe puts the countries side by side.

Import car to Czech Republic: where the registration happens

You can register at any municipal office with extended powers (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností), not only the one where the owner lives. Many offices let you book an appointment online.

A typical registration day for a dealer looks like this:

  1. Morning at the STK station: evidence check, and the full test if the car is older than four years.
  2. Insurance: the green card, usually arranged online in advance with the VIN.
  3. Registry office: hand in the documents and pay the fees.
  4. Collect the Czech registration certificate and plates.

Straightforward cases are processed on the spot. Complicated cases, such as a missing Part II, a converted vehicle or a car deregistered abroad with an unclear history, are decided in administrative proceedings, which can take up to 30 days.

Can a dealer register cars for buyers?

Yes. A dealer, or a registration agent, can act for the buyer with a power of attorney whose signature is officially verified. Many Czech dealers register imports in their own name first and sell the car already on Czech plates, which is what retail buyers expect.

VAT on cars sold into the Czech Republic

The Czech standard VAT rate is 21%. A used car bought from an EU dealer under the margin scheme arrives with no further VAT due, and a Czech dealer resells it under the margin scheme in section 90 of the Czech VAT Act (No. 235/2004 Coll.).

A VAT-qualifying car sold by a foreign dealer to a Czech VAT payer is an intra-Community supply: the seller invoices net, and the Czech buyer self-assesses 21% and deducts it. Check the buyer's VAT number in VIES before releasing the car. The cross-border rules are explained in our guide to the VAT margin scheme across EU borders.

A car less than six months old or with no more than 6,000 km is a "new means of transport". VAT is then always due in Czechia, and the registry office will want proof that it was paid.

Pricing an import for the Czech market

Because registration in Czechia costs little, the landed cost is mostly purchase price, transport and preparation. An example for a 2020 BMW 5 Series bought in Germany:

Item Amount
Purchase price in Germany (margin car) €24,500
Transport by truck (assumed quote) €450
STK check, test, registration fee, plates (assumed) €150
Preparation €400
Landed cost €25,500

Against a Czech median of about €27,400, that leaves a gross margin of around €1,900 before margin VAT and negotiation, so the car has to be bought well. For an Octavia the same maths usually fails, because the Czech market is already cheaper than Germany. MyCarDealer shows this for a specific car: the market price in your country from comparable listings and the margin after VAT and transport. You can try it with a free valuation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Czech evidence check for imported cars?

It is an inspection at an STK station before the first Czech registration. The technician checks that the VIN, engine and other identifiers match the documents and records the mileage. Cars more than four years old also need a roadworthiness test, Czech or a valid one from another EU state.

Which documents are needed to register a foreign car in Czechia?

You need ID, the complete foreign registration documents including proof of title, the invoice or contract, a Czech green card, the STK protocol and the registration application. A CoC helps, and VAT confirmation is required only for new means of transport.

Is there an ecological fee on imported cars in the Czech Republic?

Only for cars that do not meet Euro 3. The fee is CZK 3,000 for Euro 2, CZK 5,000 for Euro 1 and CZK 10,000 for cars with no emission standard, paid once at the first Czech registration. Euro 3 and newer cars pay nothing.

How long does registration of an imported car take?

With complete documents, the registry office usually finishes the same day, so a car can be tested, insured and registered within one day. Problem cases go through administrative proceedings that can last up to 30 days.

How much does it cost to register an imported car in Czechia?

The administrative fee is CZK 800, plus the STK station's charge for the evidence check and any roadworthiness test, and the insurance. There is no CO2- or value-based registration tax.
