Kia Sportage gearbox problems: DCT, automatic and clutch
Kia Sportage gearbox problems explained for dealers - 7-speed DCT judder, six-speed automatic faults, manual clutch wear and how to test before you bid.
· 8 min read
The most common Kia Sportage gearbox problems are judder and hesitation from the 7-speed dual-clutch (7DCT) when pulling away, worn clutches and dual-mass flywheels on high-mileage manual diesels, and occasional harsh or delayed shifts on the six-speed torque-converter automatic. Most DCT complaints are fixed by software or a clutch pack, not a new gearbox, so test carefully and price the repair into the bid.
Kia Sportage gearbox problems start with knowing the gearbox
The Sportage uses three types of transmission, and the risk profile depends on which one is fitted. Check the gearbox before you look at anything else, because the same model year can carry very different repair bills.
| Generation | Gearbox | Typical engines |
|---|---|---|
| QL (2016–2021) | 6-speed manual | 1.6 GDi, 1.7 CRDi, 1.6 CRDi, 2.0 CRDi |
| QL (2016–2021) | 7-speed DCT (dry dual clutch) | 1.6 T-GDi, 1.7 CRDi 141 PS, later 1.6 CRDi 136 PS |
| QL (2016–2021) | 6-speed torque-converter automatic | 2.0 CRDi, including the 48-volt mild hybrid |
| NQ5 (2022–) | 6-speed manual or 7DCT | 1.6 T-GDi, 1.6 CRDi mild hybrids |
| NQ5 (2022–) | 6-speed automatic | 1.6 T-GDi full hybrid and plug-in hybrid |
The older third-generation Sportage (SL, to 2015) mostly used a conventional automatic or a manual. For a broader look at engines and other faults, see our Kia Sportage problems guide.
Kia Sportage automatic gearbox problems: the 7-speed DCT
The 7DCT is a dry dual-clutch gearbox, and its weak point is the clutch, not the gear set. The typical complaint is judder or shudder when moving off from a standstill, especially on a slope, in slow traffic or when reversing into a space.
Kia issued technical service bulletins for 2016–2020 models with the 1.6 T-GDi and 7DCT that describe exactly this: clutch judder when accelerating from a stop. The prescribed fix starts with a transmission control unit (TCU) software update with improved anti-judder logic, followed by a retest. Only if the judder remains is the dual clutch assembly replaced.
Other symptoms reported by owners and specialists:
- hesitation under light throttle, then a sudden surge;
- jerky first-to-second shifts;
- a delayed downshift into first when rolling into a roundabout;
- a gearbox warning and limp mode after heavy use in traffic.
The logic is similar to Volkswagen's dry-clutch DQ200. Our DSG gearbox problems guide explains why dry clutches dislike stop-start traffic and towing.

Request accessSix-speed automatic and gear selector problems
The six-speed torque-converter automatic, used with the 2.0 CRDi and on the latest hybrids, is the more robust choice. Complaints are mostly about delayed engagement when cold, a harsh 1–2 or 2–3 shift, or a flare between gears, and these often improve after a fluid change and adaptation reset.
Kia Sportage gear selector problems are a separate issue. On some cars the selector does not release from Park, or the dash shows the wrong gear. Causes range from a brake light switch fault (the shift lock relies on it) to a worn selector cable or a faulty selector module. Always check that the brake lights work and that every position, including Park, is shown correctly on the dash.
Kia Sportage clutch problems on manual cars
Clutch problems on the Sportage are mostly wear-related and concentrated in high-mileage diesels. The 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi use a dual-mass flywheel, and fleet cars with a lot of urban use or towing wear out both clutch and flywheel.
Signs of a worn Sportage clutch:
- The biting point is very high near the top of the pedal travel.
- The revs rise without matching acceleration in third or fourth gear under load.
- A rattle or knock at idle that disappears when you press the clutch (often the flywheel).
- Vibration through the pedal or floor when pulling away.
- A burning smell after a hill start.
Kia Sportage manual gear shift problems, such as a notchy shift into second or a crunch into reverse, are less common. Check for worn gear-linkage bushes and the correct fluid level before you assume internal damage.
How to test a Sportage gearbox before buying
A proper test takes ten minutes and saves arguments later. At an auction you often cannot drive the car, so read the condition report closely and ask for a fault-code readout. Our guide to auction condition reports explains what the grades mean.
When you can drive the car:
- Start cold. Listen for rattles at idle and check that the selector moves freely.
- Creep test (DCT). In D, release the brake on a flat surface and then on a slight slope. Any shudder or vibration is a red flag.
- Stop-start in traffic. Do five or six slow pull-aways. A healthy 7DCT is smooth after the first one.
- Reverse. Reverse slowly up a kerb or a slope; judder often shows here first.
- Kick-down. On an open road, check that downshifts are quick and there is no flare.
- Diagnostics. Read the TCU for stored faults and ask whether the anti-judder software update has been done.
- Manual cars. With the handbrake on, select third and slowly let the clutch out. A healthy clutch stalls the engine; if it keeps running, the clutch is slipping.
What a Sportage gearbox repair costs and how to price it
The cost of a Sportage gearbox repair depends on whether it is software, a clutch pack or a full gearbox. A software update is cheap if the car is still under warranty or the dealer does it as part of a service campaign. A DCT clutch pack or a manual clutch with dual-mass flywheel is a four-figure job at an independent workshop. A replacement gearbox is the most expensive outcome and is rarely necessary.
The remaining warranty matters a lot. Kia's 7-year/150,000 km warranty in Europe is transferable to later owners if the car has been serviced on schedule, and it covers production and assembly faults. A 2020 Sportage with full Kia service history may still be covered for gearbox defects, but not for wear items such as the clutch. Always check the first registration date and the service record.
For pricing, start from the market value. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer across 18 European countries in October 2026:
| Sportage | Listings | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016–2018, all engines | 1,274 | €12,990 | 135,842 km |
| 2019–2021, all engines | 953 | €15,976 | 98,972 km |
| 2019–2021, petrol | 290 | €15,990 | — |
| 2019–2021, diesel | 424 | €15,500 | — |
Prices differ by country. A 2016–2018 Sportage had a median of €13,799 in Germany (182 listings) and €15,750 in the Netherlands (113), against €12,900 in Italy (190) and €12,288 in Czechia (216). For a 2019–2021 car the German median was €17,500 (131 listings).
Work back from that number. Take the expected retail price for your market, subtract your margin, transport and reconditioning, and then subtract the realistic repair cost if the test shows judder or a slipping clutch. Frequently asked questions
Do Kia Sportages have transmission problems?
Some do. The main issue is judder on the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox when pulling away, especially on 2016–2020 cars with the 1.6 T-GDi. Kia addressed it with a TCU software update and, where needed, a new clutch pack. The six-speed torque-converter automatic is generally more robust.
Does the Sportage DCT gearbox have problems?
The 7DCT can shudder at low speed and hesitate under light throttle. Most cases are solved by a software update or a replacement dual clutch, not a new gearbox. Test it with slow pull-aways, on a slope and in reverse.
What are the signs of a worn Sportage clutch?
A high biting point, revs rising without acceleration under load, judder when pulling away and a burning smell after hill starts are the usual signs. A rattle at idle that stops when you press the pedal often points to the dual-mass flywheel.
Is the automatic Sportage reliable?
The six-speed torque-converter automatic used with the 2.0 CRDi and the current hybrids has a good record. The dual-clutch version needs more careful testing, and a full service history with the software update recorded is a strong plus.
How much is a Kia Sportage gearbox?
A complete replacement gearbox is expensive and rarely needed. Most repairs are a software update, a DCT clutch pack or a manual clutch and flywheel, which cost far less. Get a workshop quote and subtract it from your maximum bid.
Does Kia's warranty cover gearbox faults on a used Sportage?
Kia's 7-year/150,000 km warranty transfers to the next owner and covers production and assembly defects if the car has been serviced on schedule. Wear items such as clutches are not covered, so check what exactly has failed.
