Range Rover Discovery reliability: Discovery and Sport
Range Rover Discovery reliability: Discovery 4 and 5 and Discovery Sport engines, Ingenium timing chains, air suspension and resale values.
· 6 min read
Land Rover Discovery reliability – often searched as "Range Rover Discovery reliability" – varies by generation. The Discovery 4's 3.0 V6 diesel carries crankshaft risk, the Discovery 5 adds Ingenium diesels and complex electronics, and early Discovery Sports with the 2.0 Ingenium diesel are known for timing chain stretch. Later cars with full histories are the safer stock buys.
Discovery models at a glance
The Discovery name covers two quite different cars: the full-size seven-seat Discovery and the smaller Discovery Sport. Strictly, neither is a Range Rover, but buyers often search for them that way.
| Model | Years | Main diesel engines | Key risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery 3 | 2004–2009 | 2.7 TDV6 | crankshaft bearings, age, air suspension |
| Discovery 4 | 2009–2016 | 3.0 TDV6 / SDV6 | crankshaft bearings, air suspension, rust on chassis |
| Discovery 5 | 2017– | 2.0 Ingenium SD4/TD4, 3.0 Td6, later D250/D300 six-cylinder mild hybrid | timing chains on early Ingenium, electrics, air suspension |
| Discovery Sport | 2015– | 2.0 Ingenium TD4/SD4, later D165/D200 mild hybrid; P300e plug-in | timing chain stretch on 2015–2019 diesels, electrics |
Is the Land Rover Discovery reliable?
The Discovery is reliable enough to trade if you match the engine to the history. Most problems are expensive rather than frequent, and many owners keep Discoveries for years without major trouble.
For the full-size Discovery:
- Discovery 4: Practical and popular, but its 3.0 V6 diesel can suffer crankshaft bearing failure. Our Range Rover SDV6 reliability guide covers the checks. Chassis corrosion and air suspension wear are common on older cars.
- Discovery 5: Lighter aluminium body and more modern electronics. Early 2.0 Ingenium four-cylinders may need timing chain checks; the 3.0 Td6 shares the V6 diesel family's risks. Electrical faults and infotainment bugs are frequent complaints.
- 2021-onwards Discovery 5 facelift: The 3.0 Ingenium straight-six diesels replaced the V6, and these later cars are generally the lowest-risk full-size Discoveries.

Request accessWhat problems does the Discovery Sport have?
The Discovery Sport's biggest known problem is timing chain stretch on 2015–2019 2.0 Ingenium diesels. Other common issues are electrical and infotainment faults, AdBlue system problems on later diesels and occasional gearbox complaints.
Typical findings:
- Timing chain: a rattle on cold start, then misfires and warning lights. If ignored, a chain can jump or break and destroy the engine.
- Electrics: infotainment freezes, sensor faults and battery drain.
- AdBlue and emissions systems: faults that trigger countdown warnings on Euro 6 diesels. See our guide to AdBlue faults on used diesels.
- Nine-speed automatic: some cars shift roughly at low speed; software updates help in many cases.
- P300e plug-in hybrid (2020 onwards): a three-cylinder petrol with an electric motor; check charging and battery health as on any plug-in.
Do Ingenium diesels suffer timing chain stretch?
Yes, some 2.0 Ingenium diesels, especially those built before about 2019, are known for timing chain stretch. The chain is at the rear of the engine, so replacement is labour-intensive and costly.
Specialists commonly report problems appearing between roughly 100,000 and 160,000 km, sometimes earlier. Risk factors include long oil change intervals and the wrong oil. Signs include:
- A metallic rattle for a few seconds on cold start.
- Engine warning lights with camshaft or crankshaft correlation codes.
- Rough running or loss of power.
What to do as a buyer:
- Listen to the engine from completely cold – ask the seller not to start it before you arrive.
- Read stored fault codes, including correlation codes.
- Check for documented chain replacement.
- Price a chain job into the bid on any 2015–2019 car without evidence.
The same engine family is used in the Evoque, so our Range Rover Evoque reliability guide covers similar checks.
Air suspension, chassis and electrics on the Discovery
Air suspension is standard on most Discovery 4 and many Discovery 5 models, and it is a regular source of bills. Check ride height after the car has stood, test all heights and listen for the compressor running repeatedly.
Discovery 4 cars use a separate chassis that can corrode, particularly in markets with road salt. Inspect the frame, rear cross-member and suspension mounts. Discovery 5 cars have an aluminium monocoque, so chassis rust is less of a concern, but electrical complexity is higher.
Which Discovery is best for stock?
For most dealers, the best Discovery for stock is a 2020-onwards Discovery Sport or a 2021-onwards Discovery 5 with a full dealer or specialist history. These cars avoid the V6 crank risk and the worst of the early Ingenium chain problems, and they have the strongest retail demand.
Older cars can still make money if bought cheaply enough:
- Discovery 4: Strong demand from buyers who need towing and seven seats, but price the crank and chassis risk.
- Early Discovery Sport: Cheap and plentiful, but price a timing chain job if there is no evidence.
What Discoveries sell for in Europe
Discovery values differ widely by generation and country. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Poland in October 2026:
| Model and years | Listings | Median asking price |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery 4 diesel, 2010–2016 | 198 | €12,990 |
| Discovery 5 diesel, 2017–2021 | 216 | €21,900 |
| Discovery Sport diesel, 2015–2019 | 795 | €11,950 |
| Discovery Sport, all fuels, 2020–2023 | 629 | €25,900 |
By country, 2015–2019 Discovery Sport diesels had a median of €10,000 in Belgium, €11,945 in the Netherlands and €12,900 in Germany. For 2020–2023 cars, the Netherlands (€29,950) and Germany (€28,390) were well above Belgium (€22,400) and Italy (€23,900). That gap is wide enough to make cross-border buying worthwhile, once transport, registration and VAT are counted.
How to price a Discovery before bidding
Price a Discovery from the current retail median in your country, then deduct costs and a reserve tied to the engine.
- Identify generation and engine exactly.
- Find the retail median for comparable cars in your market; a free valuation does this in seconds.
- Deduct transport, preparation, warranty and VAT on your margin under the margin scheme (VAT Directive 2006/112/EC, Articles 311–343) or full VAT on a VAT-qualifying car.
- Add a reserve: timing chain on early Ingenium diesels, crank risk on V6 diesels, air suspension on older cars.
- Set your maximum bid and stick to it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Land Rover Discovery reliable?
It is reliable enough to trade profitably if you choose the right engine and history. The Discovery 4's V6 diesel and the early Ingenium four-cylinders have known weaknesses, while later straight-six diesels are generally lower risk.
What problems does the Discovery Sport have?
The best-known problem is timing chain stretch on 2015–2019 2.0 Ingenium diesels. Electrical faults, infotainment bugs, AdBlue system issues and occasional gearbox complaints are also common.
Do Ingenium diesels suffer timing chain stretch?
Some do, especially those built before about 2019. Listen for a cold-start rattle, read fault codes and check for documented chain replacement before buying.
Which Discovery is best for stock?
A 2020-onwards Discovery Sport or a 2021-onwards Discovery 5 with full history usually offers the best balance of demand and risk. Older cars can work if the price leaves room for known repairs.
Is the Discovery 5 more reliable than the Discovery 4?
It avoids some of the Discovery 4's chassis corrosion and, with the later straight-six diesels, its V6 crank risk. It is more complex electrically, so a full diagnostic scan is essential.
