Polestar used: Polestar 2 buying guide for dealers
Polestar used buying guide: Polestar 2 battery versions, software updates, 12-volt faults, depreciation and how to price it for stock.
· 8 min read
A used Polestar 2 is a sound stock car for dealers if you buy it after the steepest part of its depreciation and check three things: software and recall status, the 12-volt battery and the high-voltage battery's state of health. The core electric hardware has a good record; most Polestar complaints concern software and low-voltage electrics, which you can test before you bid.
What is a Polestar, and who builds it?
Polestar is a Swedish-headquartered electric car brand that is an affiliate of Volvo Cars and Geely Holding. It started as Volvo's performance division and became a separate brand in 2017. The Polestar 2, the model that matters for used stock, has been built since March 2020 at the Luqiao plant in Zhejiang, China, on Volvo's CMA platform, which it shares with the XC40 and C40 Recharge.
That Volvo link answers the most common buyer question, "are Polestars made by Volvo?": not exactly, but they use Volvo engineering, many Volvo parts, and in many European markets Volvo workshops handle servicing. For a dealer that matters because it makes the car easier to sell to buyers who worry about after-sales support from a young brand.
The Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 also appear on the used market now, but in much smaller numbers and at prices that suit fewer forecourts. This guide concentrates on the 2.
Polestar 2 versions: which battery to stock
The Polestar 2 changed more under the skin than its looks suggest, so the model year matters as much as mileage. The key break is model year 2024, when single-motor cars switched from front- to rear-wheel drive and both battery packs were replaced.
| Version | Model years | Battery | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Range Dual Motor (incl. Launch Edition, Performance Pack) | 2020–2023 | 78 kWh gross, about 75 kWh usable | Most common early car, all-wheel drive |
| Standard Range Single Motor | 2021–2023 | Smaller pack, front-wheel drive | Cheapest entry, shortest range |
| Long Range Single Motor | 2021–2023 | 78 kWh gross | Front-wheel drive |
| Standard Range Single Motor | 2024 on | 69 kWh (LG Chem) | Rear-wheel drive, up to 135 kW DC |
| Long Range Single / Dual Motor | 2024 on | 82 kWh (CATL) | Up to 205 kW DC, up to 592 km WLTP on the dual motor |
For retail stock, the long-range cars are the safer choice. Buyers of a 4.6-metre family car expect motorway range, and the 2024-on single-motor long range is the version most often recommended by reviewers because of its rear-wheel drive and efficiency. Standard-range cars are cheaper to buy, but you are selling them into a narrower buyer pool.

Request accessHow reliable is a used Polestar 2?
A used Polestar 2 is mechanically robust, but it has a long list of software and low-voltage irritations, most of which can be fixed. Early cars had two recalls in October 2020, one for software that could cause a loss of power and one for faulty inverters. Later recalls have also been software-based, including one for the reversing camera image.
The issues owners report most often are:
- 12-volt battery faults. A weak 12 V battery can trigger warnings, odd behaviour or a car that will not wake up, especially after a long standstill or a large software update. It is cheap to replace and should be tested on every car.
- Infotainment freezes and reboots. The Polestar 2 was the first car with Google's Android Automotive built in. Early software versions froze or rebooted; later updates improved this.
- Telematics and connectivity faults, which break app access and over-the-air updates.
- Occasional DC charging handshake problems at some public chargers.
The 2024-on cars benefit from several years of running changes and are generally regarded as more sorted than 2021–2022 builds. Treat an early car with an out-of-date software version as a car that needs a workshop visit before sale, and price that time in.
What to check before you bid on a used Polestar
Check a used Polestar on the things that cost you money or delay the sale, in this order:
- Software version and recall status. Ask the seller or a Polestar/Volvo workshop to confirm the car is on current software and that all recalls are closed. Our guide to checking recalls on used stock explains how.
- Battery state of health. The battery warranty covers 8 years or 160,000 km and includes replacement if capacity falls below 70% in that time. Polestar also introduced battery health certificates in 2025. Ask for one, or use one of the methods in our EV battery health check guide.
- 12-volt battery test. Do it on the spot, not after purchase.
- Charging test. Charge the car on AC and on a DC rapid charger before it goes on sale.
- Tyres and brakes. The dual-motor cars are heavy and quick, and rear tyres on Performance Pack cars wear fast.
- Glass roof and paint. Check for stone chips on the front and the condition of the panoramic roof seal.
How fast do Polestars depreciate?
Polestars lost value quickly in their first years, like most premium EVs, but the curve flattens once cars are three or four years old. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices for the Polestar 2 across the European countries we follow were:
| Model years | Listings | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020–2021 | 121 | €26,000 | 107,000 km |
| 2022–2023 | 387 | €29,900 | 66,000 km |
| 2024–2025 | 151 | €39,990 | 31,000 km |
By country, 2022–2023 cars had medians of €30,729 in Sweden, €29,990 in Germany, €28,950 in the Netherlands, €28,700 in Belgium and €29,900 in Austria. For 2020–2021 cars, Sweden (€28,167) was well above the Netherlands (€25,450).
Two conclusions follow. First, the gap between a 2020–2021 car and a 2022–2023 car is only about €3,900, despite roughly 40,000 km less on the newer cars, so early cars are not much of a bargain to retail. Second, the 2024–2025 cars carry a €10,000 premium for the new batteries and rear-wheel drive, which is where the next big drop will come. If you buy late cars, buy them cheaply and sell them fast.
New Polestar 2s shipped from China now fall under EU countervailing duties on Chinese-built battery electric cars. The duty for the Geely group is 18.8% under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754, on top of the standard 10% import duty. These duties apply when a new car is imported, not to used cars already registered in the EU, but they support new-car prices and so help used values.
Tesla or Polestar: which sells better used?
Tesla and Polestar compete for the same buyer, and the Tesla Model 3 is the benchmark your Polestar will be compared with. The Model 3 is more common, more efficient and easier to price, while the Polestar 2 wins on build quality, ride comfort and the Volvo-backed service network. For details on the competitor see our guide to the used Tesla Model 3.
In practice, the Polestar sells best to buyers who come from Volvo, Audi or BMW and dislike Tesla's minimalist interior. Price it close to a comparable Model 3, not far above it, unless it has low mileage or the newer battery.
How to price a used Polestar 2 for stock
Price a used Polestar 2 from comparable cars with the same battery, drive layout and model year, not from the model average. A 2021 dual-motor and a 2024 single-motor long range are different cars to a buyer.
Work backwards from your realistic retail price: deduct VAT (under the margin scheme only on your margin), preparation, the battery report, transport and your target profit. What remains is your maximum bid. MyCarDealer does this calculation from current listings in your country; you can test it with a free valuation of one car.
Frequently asked questions
Are Polestar cars made by Volvo?
Polestar is a separate brand affiliated with Volvo Cars and Geely Holding. The Polestar 2 is built in China on Volvo's CMA platform and shares many parts with the Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Volvo workshops service Polestars in many European countries.
Are Polestar cars reliable?
The battery and motors have a good record. Most problems are software bugs, infotainment freezes and 12-volt battery faults, which are usually fixed by updates or a new 12 V battery. Cars on current software with closed recalls are the safest buy.
Which Polestar 2 battery version should I stock?
Long-range versions sell more easily because buyers of a family-size EV want motorway range. The 2024-on single-motor long range with the 82 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive is the most desirable, but also the most expensive to buy.
How fast do Polestars depreciate?
Fast in the first two or three years, then more slowly. In October 2026, median asking prices tracked by MyCarDealer were around €40,000 for 2024–2025 cars, €29,900 for 2022–2023 cars and €26,000 for 2020–2021 cars.
Which is better, Tesla or Polestar?
For a dealer, the Tesla Model 3 is easier to price and sells in larger volume, while the Polestar 2 appeals to buyers who want a more conventional premium interior and a Volvo-linked service network. Price the Polestar close to an equivalent Model 3.
