Renault electric cars used: Zoe battery hire and checks
Renault electric cars used: Zoe battery hire contracts and buyouts, Megane E-Tech and Twingo checks, battery health and resale values for dealers.
· 8 min read
Used Renault electric cars are mostly the Zoe, the Megane E-Tech Electric and the Twingo Electric, with the Renault 5, Scenic and Kangoo E-Tech arriving in growing numbers. The key check is ownership of the battery: many Zoes were sold with a hired battery, which lowers the car's value unless the contract is bought out. After that, battery health, charging hardware and software updates decide the price.
Which electric cars Renault makes and sells used
Renault has built electric cars in volume since 2012, so the used market covers several generations. The main models dealers meet are:
| Model | Years | Battery | What buyers look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoe (22 kWh) | 2013–2016 | 22 kWh | Cheapest EV; short range |
| Zoe (41 kWh) | 2016–2019 | 41 kWh | Usable everyday range |
| Zoe (52 kWh) | 2019–2024 | 52 kWh | Best Zoe; optional DC charging |
| Twingo Electric | 2020–2024 | about 22 kWh | City car, low running costs |
| Megane E-Tech Electric | from 2022 | 40 or 60 kWh | Family hatch, DC charging |
| Renault 5 / Scenic / Kangoo E-Tech | from 2022–2024 | various | Young cars, mostly ex-lease |
Zoe production ended at Flins on 30 March 2024, so every Zoe on the market is now at least two years old. The cheapest Renault electric car on the used market is an early 22 kWh Zoe, followed by the Twingo Electric.
Renault Zoe battery hire: how it affects value
A Zoe with a hired battery is worth noticeably less than the same car with an owned battery, because the buyer takes over a monthly rental contract. Renault sold many Zoes with the car bought and the battery leased from its finance company, today Mobilize Financial Services (formerly DIAC). The rent depends on the contract and annual mileage.
The hire contract had real advantages: Renault guaranteed the battery for the life of the contract and replaced it if capacity fell too far. But most used-car buyers do not want a second contract, and many banks will not finance a car whose battery belongs to someone else. As residual values of owned batteries improved, Renault stopped offering battery hire on new Zoes in several markets.
When you assess a Zoe, ask three questions:
- Is the battery owned or hired? The registration documents do not always tell you. Ask the seller for the contract or a buyout confirmation, and check with the finance company using the VIN.
- If hired, can the contract be transferred or ended? A transfer requires the new owner to sign a new contract with the finance company.
- What is the buyout price? This must come off your bid.

Request accessCan a hired Zoe battery be bought out?
Yes. Renault's finance arm offers buyouts, and the price depends on battery size, age, mileage, the rent already paid and the battery's state of health. In France, published examples and owner reports put most buyouts between about €2,000 and €7,000; older 22 kWh batteries sit at the lower end and young 41 or 52 kWh batteries at the upper end. There is no public price list, so you need a written offer for the specific VIN.
Offers vary by country. In June 2026, Mobilize offered certain Belgian customers a buyout for €1 excluding VAT. Always get a firm offer in writing before you bid.
After a buyout the lifetime battery guarantee from the hire contract ends. What remains is the manufacturer's battery warranty, which runs 8 years or 160,000 km from first registration. A 2016 Zoe bought out today has no battery warranty left, so the battery's state of health becomes the main value driver.
What to check on a used Renault EV
Check the battery, the charging hardware and the software, in that order.
- Battery state of health. Get a diagnostic read-out or an independent battery certificate. Our EV battery health check guide explains acceptable values by age.
- Charging. Test AC charging on a wallbox and, where fitted, DC rapid charging. Early Zoes have no DC socket; the 52 kWh Zoe had DC charging as an option, which buyers value.
- Charging cable. A missing Type 2 cable costs a few hundred euros.
- 12-volt battery. A weak 12 V battery causes many of the warning lights and "car won't start" complaints on EVs.
- Software updates. On the Megane E-Tech, owners report software bugs such as phantom warnings, inaccurate range estimates and climate control faults. Ask for proof that updates have been done.
- Air conditioning. Renault advises keeping the air conditioning running during rapid charging on Megane E-Tech cars without a heat pump to protect the compressor; check that the system blows cold.
- Recalls. Run a recall check with the VIN; see our article on open recalls on used stock.
How reliable is the Megane E-Tech?
The Megane E-Tech Electric has had few mechanical problems so far; most complaints concern software, infotainment and minor suspension noises. Over-the-air updates have fixed many issues, but some owners report updates that fail or create new bugs. For a dealer the practical rule is simple: buy cars with a documented update history and test every function before retailing.
The 60 kWh version is easier to sell than the 40 kWh version because buyers of a family hatch expect at least 350 km of real summer range.
What happens to an EV after 8 years?
After 8 years most EV batteries are still usable, but the manufacturer's warranty ends and the buyer carries the full risk. A replacement Zoe battery can cost well over €10,000, which is more than the car is worth. That is why old Zoes with owned batteries trade at low prices and why state of health matters so much.
An 8-year-old Zoe with a healthy battery is still a good second car for short daily trips. One with heavy degradation should be priced as a city runabout with limited range, or sold to the trade.
Used Renault EV prices and resale values
Used Renault EV prices vary widely with battery size, ownership and country. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Poland and Sweden in October 2026:
| Model and years | Listings | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoe 2013–2016 | 145 | €6,500 | 89,400 km |
| Zoe 2019–2021 | 608 | €12,990 | 57,500 km |
| Twingo Electric 2021–2023 | 159 | €12,400 | 33,500 km |
| Megane E-Tech Electric 2022–2024 | 192 | €24,900 | 35,500 km |
These listings mix cars with owned and hired batteries, so compare only like with like. Country gaps are large: for the 2019–2021 Zoe, the median was €13,500 in Germany and €10,500 in Italy. Our comparison of used electric car prices in Europe shows where EVs are cheaper to buy.

Which EVs should dealers stay away from?
Dealers should stay away from EVs they cannot verify, not from a particular brand. For Renault models, the risky cars are Zoes with an unclear battery status, cars with no battery report, cars with charging faults and cars outside warranty with low state of health. Our guide to used electric cars for dealers covers how to build an EV stock policy.
Frequently asked questions
What electric cars does Renault make?
Renault has made the Zoe, Twingo Electric, Megane E-Tech Electric, Scenic E-Tech, Renault 5 and Renault 4 E-Tech and the Kangoo E-Tech van, among others. The Zoe was built from 2012 until March 2024 and is the most common used Renault EV.
What is the cheapest Renault electric car?
On the used market, an early 22 kWh Zoe from 2013–2016 is the cheapest; in our October 2026 data their median asking price was about €6,500. Check whether the battery is hired, because the asking price may exclude it.
What is Renault Zoe battery hire?
Many Zoes were sold with the car bought outright and the battery rented monthly from Renault's finance company. The buyer of such a car has to take over the rental contract or buy the battery out, which lowers the car's resale value.
Can a hired Zoe battery be bought out?
Yes, through Mobilize Financial Services. The price depends on the battery's size, age, mileage and condition, and in France it usually falls between about €2,000 and €7,000. Get a written offer for the specific VIN before buying the car.
What happens to an EV after 8 years?
The battery usually still works, but the typical 8-year battery warranty ends. Any further loss of capacity or failure is at the owner's cost, so state of health becomes the main factor in the car's value.
