Car dealer reviews: getting and answering customer reviews
Car dealer reviews: when to ask for them, how to reply to negative reviews, EU rules on fake reviews and a Google Business Profile that converts.
· 7 min read
Car dealer reviews are often the first thing a buyer checks after finding a car, because buying a used car means trusting a dealer they have never met. Get more reviews by asking every customer at the right moment with a direct link, reply to every review, especially the negative ones, calmly and specifically, and never buy, fake or filter reviews, which EU consumer law prohibits.
Do car dealer reviews affect enquiries?
Reviews affect enquiries because they shape the decision at two points: whether a buyer contacts you about a car, and whether a local search shows your business at all. A buyer comparing two similar cars at similar prices will often choose the dealer with more recent, better reviews, and a low rating can make a distant buyer give up on a car before calling.
For local searches, Google says that review count and score are among the factors that influence prominence in local results. That matters for searches such as "used cars near me" or "car dealer" plus your town.
What buyers actually read:
- Recent reviews. A five-star rating from four years ago says little about your business today.
- Negative reviews and your replies. Buyers want to see how you handle problems.
- Specifics. "Car exactly as described, delivered to Vienna, paperwork perfect" is worth more than "great".
How can a car dealer get more Google reviews?
A car dealer gets more Google reviews by asking every customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a link that takes them straight to the review form. Most satisfied customers will leave a review if asked; few do it unprompted.
- Create a short review link in your Google Business Profile and turn it into a QR code.
- Ask at handover, when the customer has the keys and is excited. A sentence is enough: "If you're happy with how it went, a review would really help us."
- Follow up the same day with a message containing the link.
- Remind once after a week or two, for example with the first service reminder or a "how is the car?" message.
- Make it part of the process. Put the QR code on the handover folder and train every salesperson to ask.
Ask every customer, not just the ones you expect to be positive. Google's review policies do not allow offering incentives for reviews or selectively asking only satisfied customers, and filtering also creates legal risk, as the next section shows.

Request accessEU rules on fake and incentivised reviews
EU law prohibits fake reviews and requires honesty about how reviews are collected. The Omnibus Directive (EU) 2019/2161 added two practices to the blacklist of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive that are banned in all circumstances:
- stating that reviews come from consumers who actually used or bought the product without taking reasonable and proportionate steps to check that they do;
- submitting or commissioning false consumer reviews, or misrepresenting reviews, to promote products.
In addition, a trader who gives access to consumer reviews must tell consumers whether and how it ensures that the reviews come from real customers.
For a dealer this means:
- No fake reviews, from staff, friends or paid services.
- No buying reviews with discounts, fuel vouchers or free valeting in exchange for a rating.
- No selective display that hides negative reviews on your own website while claiming they are genuine customer feedback.
- Explain your process if you show reviews on your site, for example that only reviews from verified buyers are displayed.
Breaches can lead to fines by consumer protection authorities and to claims from competitors in several countries.
How should a dealer respond to a negative review?
A dealer should respond to a negative review quickly, calmly and specifically, and then try to solve the problem offline. Your reply is written for future buyers as much as for the unhappy customer.
A reply that works has four parts:
- Thank and acknowledge: "Thank you for your feedback, and I'm sorry the warning light came on so soon after purchase."
- Facts without arguing: "We checked the car before sale and fixed the sensor free of charge on the 12th."
- Offer a next step: "If anything is still not right, please call me directly on…"
- Sign with a name. Replies from a real person read as accountable.
Avoid:
- arguing about details in public;
- revealing personal data such as the buyer's full name, finance details or contract;
- replying angrily the same evening; wait until you can be factual.
If a review is fake, offensive or from someone who was never a customer, report it through your Business Profile. Do not accuse a real customer of lying in public.
Most complaints that end up in reviews are about after-sale problems. Clear warranty terms reduce them; see our guide to the legal guarantee on used cars in the EU.
Which details should a dealer Google Business Profile include?
A dealer Google Business Profile should include everything a buyer needs to decide to visit or call, kept accurate. A complete, active profile converts local searches into enquiries; an incomplete one sends buyers to the competitor next door.

Update photos regularly and reply to every review, positive and negative. A short "Thank you, enjoy the Octavia!" shows that a real business is behind the profile.
Using reviews beyond Google
Reviews are useful beyond Google if you use them where buyers make decisions. Show recent reviews on your website's stock pages and contact page, with the source named. Quote them in replies to enquiries from distant buyers who worry about buying unseen. Listing platforms often have their own dealer ratings; ask customers to rate you where they found the car.
Reviews also show you where your process breaks. If several reviews mention slow paperwork, the problem is the paperwork, not the reviews. Read them monthly with your team, together with your car dealer KPIs.
Frequently asked questions
How can a car dealer get more Google reviews?
Ask every customer at handover, send a direct review link or QR code the same day, and remind once after a week or two. Make asking part of every sale. Do not offer rewards for reviews or ask only customers you expect to be happy.
How should a dealer respond to a negative review?
Reply promptly and calmly, acknowledge the problem, state the facts without arguing, offer a direct contact and sign with your name. Then solve the issue offline. Never disclose the customer's personal data in a public reply.
Do reviews affect how many enquiries a dealer gets?
Yes. Buyers compare dealers' ratings and replies before contacting them, and Google says review count and score influence how prominently a business appears in local search results.
Is it legal to pay for reviews or post reviews from staff?
No. Under EU consumer law, commissioning fake reviews and presenting unverified reviews as genuine customer feedback are banned commercial practices. Offering incentives for reviews also breaches Google's review policies.
Which details should a dealer Google Business Profile include?
The real business name, correct category, address, opening hours, a phone number that is answered, a link to your stock, current photos and a short description including languages spoken and delivery options.
