Citroen cars used: models, engines and risks for dealers

Citroen cars on the used market: C3, C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo, PureTech and BlueHDi faults, AdBlue tanks and resale values.

· 7 min read

Used Citroen cars are cheap to buy and comfortable to drive, which makes them good budget stock, but two engine families decide whether you make money: the 1.0/1.2 PureTech petrol with its oil-bathed timing belt and BlueHDi diesels with AdBlue system faults. Check both, use the manufacturer's extended cover where it applies, and buy at a price that reflects Citroen's low residual values.

Is Citroen a car brand, and who owns it?

Citroen is a French car brand founded in 1919 and today part of Stellantis, the group formed in 2021 from the merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler. Citroen shares platforms, engines and gearboxes with Peugeot, Opel, DS and some Fiat models, which matters for dealers: a fault on a Peugeot engine is a fault on the Citroen version too, and parts are widely available.

The brand's selling point is comfort: soft suspension, comfortable seats and, on many recent models, "Advanced Comfort" suspension with hydraulic bump stops. Buyers who want a relaxed, affordable car like that; buyers who want sporty handling look elsewhere.

Which Citroen cars sell on the used market?

The Citroen cars you will see most in trade are the C3, the C4, the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross SUVs and the Berlingo. In our data, the C3 was the most common Citroen by a wide margin, followed by the C4, Berlingo, C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross.

Model Years (current generation) Typical buyer Main engines
C3 2016 on First-car and budget buyers 1.2 PureTech petrol, 1.5/1.6 BlueHDi
C3 Aircross 2017 on Older buyers, small families 1.2 PureTech, 1.5 BlueHDi
C4 / ë-C4 2020 on Families wanting comfort 1.2 PureTech, 1.5 BlueHDi, electric
C5 Aircross 2018 on Families, ex-fleet buyers 1.2 PureTech, 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi, plug-in hybrid
Berlingo 2018 on Families, tradespeople 1.5 BlueHDi, 1.2 PureTech, electric ë-Berlingo
C5 X 2022 on Comfort-oriented buyers PureTech, plug-in hybrid

Does Citroen make SUVs? Yes, the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross are its main SUVs, and the current C4 and C5 X are raised crossovers.

Which Citroen engines should I avoid?

The Citroen engine that needs the most care is the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder petrol in its earlier form with an oil-bathed timing belt. The belt can degrade and shed particles that block the oil pickup and cause oil pressure loss, high oil consumption and, in the worst case, engine damage.

Stellantis responded with an extended warranty: since March 2024, earlier PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines have been covered for up to 10 years or 175,000 km for both parts and labour, under conditions. The main ones are that the car was serviced according to the manufacturer's plan, proven by invoices from any workshop, and that diagnosis and repair are done in the Stellantis network. For a dealer, that means:

  1. Ask for every service invoice. Without them, the extended cover may not apply.
  2. Check the belt condition and oil level, and look for oil consumption complaints or warnings.
  3. Check the car's age and mileage against the 10-year / 175,000 km limit.
  4. Ask a Citroen dealer whether any repair has already been done under the programme.

Our guide to Peugeot 1.2 PureTech problems explains the engine in detail; it applies equally to Citroen.

Other powertrains to treat with care: the older robotised manual gearboxes on pre-2016 cars, which are jerky and unpopular, and the onboard charger on ë-C4 and other electric models, which has failed on many Stellantis EVs. See our Peugeot electric cars guide for the charger issue.

Are Citroen AdBlue problems common?

Yes, AdBlue problems are common on Citroen BlueHDi diesels from the Euro 6 era, especially the 1.5 BlueHDi. The typical fault is in the AdBlue tank and pump assembly, often linked to crystallisation, and shows as an AdBlue warning with a countdown to a no-start. Replacing the tank assembly is expensive.

Stellantis has run goodwill and warranty extension programmes for AdBlue systems on Peugeot and Citroen diesels. According to reports, cars under five years old and under 150,000 km get full parts cover, with partial cover for older cars up to about eight years. The terms vary by country and over time, so check the specific car by VIN with a Citroen dealer before you buy. Our guide to AdBlue faults on used diesels covers the checks and repair options.

Some owners also report timing-chain wear on the 1.5 BlueHDi; listen for chain noise on a cold start.

Are used Citroen cars reliable?

Used Citroen cars are reasonably reliable apart from the known PureTech and AdBlue issues, and they are cheap to repair. Common smaller faults are electrical: infotainment glitches, sensors and parking cameras. The automatic EAT6 and EAT8 gearboxes have a better reputation than the old robotised manuals.

When you inspect a Citroen:

  1. Engine type and history, as above.
  2. AdBlue warning or countdown on diesels.
  3. Suspension and steering, especially on high-mileage C5 Aircross and Berlingo.
  4. Interior wear: soft seats and light trims show use quickly.
  5. Sliding doors and load area on Berlingos used for work.

Do used Citroens sell quickly?

Used Citroens sell quickly at the right price, because buyers look at them as affordable, comfortable family cars. They do not sell quickly if priced too close to Peugeot, Skoda or Toyota equivalents. Citroen residuals are among the lower ones in the mainstream market, which makes them cheap to buy but limits what you can ask.

According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices in the European countries we follow were:

Model Years Fuel Listings Median price Median mileage
C3 2018–2020 Petrol 812 €8,000 82,300 km
C4 2021–2023 Petrol 570 €14,600 50,000 km
C5 Aircross 2019–2021 Diesel 517 €13,990 119,900 km
Berlingo 2019–2021 Diesel 528 €12,299 115,800 km

By country:

  • C3 petrol: Italy €8,990, the Netherlands €9,000 and Germany €8,900, against €6,490 in France, €6,602 in Poland and €7,164 in Czechia.
  • C4 petrol: Sweden €16,740, Germany €15,999 and the Netherlands €15,900, against €13,227 in Poland and €13,854 in Czechia.
  • C5 Aircross diesel: Germany €16,000 and Austria €15,990, against €13,099 in Belgium and €13,108 in Czechia.
  • Berlingo diesel: Spain €14,728 and Germany €13,950, against €9,990 in France and €11,171 in Poland.

France is notably cheap for C3s and Berlingos in this data, which is useful if you buy cross-border. Check the engine and the PureTech or AdBlue history before you count on the gap.

How to buy Citroens profitably

Buy Citroens profitably by paying a budget price and avoiding the expensive faults:

  1. Value from current listings of the same model, engine and year in your market.
  2. Prefer cars with full service invoices, which keep the PureTech extended cover alive.
  3. Check AdBlue status on diesels and ask a dealer about open programmes.
  4. Price below the Peugeot equivalent, which buyers will compare.
  5. Calculate your maximum bid backwards from realistic retail price, minus VAT, preparation, transport and profit.

Frequently asked questions

Are used Citroen cars reliable?

Generally yes, apart from two known issues: the oil-bathed timing belt on earlier 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrols and AdBlue system faults on BlueHDi diesels. Both are covered by Stellantis extension programmes under conditions, so check the history.

Which Citroen engines should I avoid?

Be careful with earlier 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrols without full service records and with older robotised manual gearboxes. BlueHDi diesels are fine if the AdBlue system is healthy.

Are Citroen AdBlue problems common?

Yes, especially on Euro 6 BlueHDi diesels. AdBlue tank and pump failures cause warnings and a countdown to a no-start; Stellantis has offered extended cover depending on the car's age and mileage.

Does Citroen make SUVs?

Yes. The C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross are Citroen's main SUVs, and the C4 and C5 X are raised crossovers. On the used market, the C5 Aircross is the most important for family buyers.

What's the best used Citroen for dealers?

The C5 Aircross and Berlingo diesels with healthy AdBlue systems sell well to families, and the C3 sells to budget buyers. Buy them at budget prices and price them below equivalent Peugeots.
