MG electric car used: MG4 and ZS EV buying guide
MG electric car used buying guide: MG4 and ZS EV battery health, 7-year warranty, common faults and why MG residual values are low.
· 7 min read
A used MG electric car is one of the cheapest ways into an EV for your customers, and it can earn a dealer a solid margin if you buy it cheaply enough. The MG4 and ZS EV are mechanically simple and often still under MG's transferable 7-year warranty. The risks are low residual values, software faults and 12-volt battery drain, so check warranty status and battery health before you bid.
Which MG electric cars are on the used market?
The used MG electric cars that matter for European dealers are the MG4 hatchback and the ZS EV small SUV, with the MG5 estate and Marvel R in much smaller numbers. MG is a former British brand now owned by China's SAIC Motor, and its European electric cars are built in China (the MG4 also in Thailand since 2023).
| Model | Years | Battery options | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZS EV (first version) | 2019–2021 | 44.5 kWh | Short range, cheapest used EV SUV |
| ZS EV (facelift) | 2021 on | 51.1 kWh LFP or 72.6 kWh NMC | Long Range version is the one to buy |
| MG4 Standard Range | 2022 on | 51 kWh LFP | Rear-wheel drive, city and commuter buyers |
| MG4 Long Range | 2022 on | 64 kWh NMC | Best balance of price and range |
| MG4 Extended Range | 2023 on | 77 kWh NMC | Longest range, smaller volume |
| MG4 XPower | 2023 on | 64 kWh NMC | All-wheel drive, fast, heavy on tyres |
The MG4 launched in Europe in July 2022 on SAIC's own rear-wheel-drive EV platform and is a better car than the ZS EV in almost every respect: more range, better handling and a more modern cabin. The ZS EV, however, is an SUV, and that body style still sells easily to older buyers.
Does the MG warranty transfer to the next owner?
Yes. MG's 7-year / 150,000 km manufacturer's warranty transfers to each new owner for as long as it runs. In Europe it applies to MGs sold new from 1 January 2021, including the ZS EV, and covers the whole car including the high-voltage battery and the electric motor.
For a dealer this is a strong selling point. A 2022 MG4 still has years of manufacturer cover left, which buyers of a cheap EV value highly. Before you advertise it, check three things:
- First registration date and mileage, which decide how much cover remains.
- Service history. Warranty claims depend on servicing in line with MG's schedule; check with the national importer which workshops are accepted.
- Cars sold before 2021. Early ZS EVs may have shorter cover, depending on the country where they were first sold.
MG's anti-perforation warranty also requires annual inspections at an authorised MG repairer, so a missing inspection can void that part of the cover.

Request accessHow reliable is a used MG4?
A used MG4 is mechanically reliable, but software and electrical niggles are common, especially on early 2022 cars. Most reported faults are software-related rather than mechanical.
The issues to look for:
- 12-volt battery drain when the car stands for three weeks or more. Early 2022 cars are most affected. Keep stock cars on a maintainer or drive them regularly.
- Software bugs in the infotainment, driver assistance (including false emergency-braking alerts) and range estimation. Ask for confirmation that all available updates have been installed.
- Charging interruptions reported by some owners, including in Swedish tests.
- Interior trim and gear selector, which feel cheap and can rattle or fail.
- Paint and panel gaps, which matter for retail presentation.
Battery degradation appears modest. Independent reviewers report losses of only a few percent in the first 80,000 km, with a flatter curve afterwards, but how the car was charged matters. A car used mainly on motorway rapid chargers deserves a closer look. Use the methods in our EV battery health check guide and keep the report for the buyer.
What should I check on a used ZS EV?
On a used ZS EV, check the battery version first, because it decides who will buy the car. A first-generation 44.5 kWh car has a short real-world range and sells to local and second-car buyers only. The facelift Long Range with the 72.6 kWh battery has a much wider market.
Then check:
- Battery state of health and any warning messages.
- AC and DC charging, on a real charger, not just the plug-in light.
- 12-volt battery condition.
- Tyres and suspension, since many ZS EVs were used as taxis or fleet cars.
- Infotainment and camera, which on early cars can be slow or freeze.
Why do MG EVs depreciate quickly?
MG EVs depreciate quickly because they are sold new at low prices with heavy discounts, and every cut in new prices lowers the value of used cars. Used MGs also face a crowded market: many near-identical cars return from leasing and fleets at the same time, and buyers can choose from many alternatives.
According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices in the European countries we follow were:
| Model | Years | Listings | Median price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG4 | 2022–2023 | 351 | €20,328 | 44,000 km |
| MG4 | 2024–2025 | 193 | €23,999 | 19,100 km |
| ZS EV | 2020–2022 | 322 | €14,745 | 67,500 km |
The country spread is wide. For 2022–2023 MG4s, medians were €21,995 in the Netherlands and €20,900 in Belgium, but €18,950 in Germany, €18,701 in Sweden, €18,400 in Italy and €18,000 in Spain. For 2024–2025 cars, Spain (€21,890) and Italy (€19,800) were far below Czechia (€27,340), Belgium (€27,225) and the Netherlands (€25,495). ZS EVs were cheapest in Sweden (€13,355), against €15,495 in the Netherlands and €16,750 in Germany.
That is why buying across borders works with MGs: the cars are uniform, the warranty is pan-European and price gaps of €3,000 or more appear regularly. Check battery size and trim before you compare.
New MG electric cars imported from China also carry the highest EU countervailing duty, 35.3% for the SAIC group under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754, on top of the 10% standard duty. That does not apply to used cars already registered in the EU.
How to price a used MG electric car
Price a used MG electric car against current listings of the same battery and year in your own country, and against discounted new and pre-registered cars, because that is your real competition. Then work backwards:
- Realistic retail price in your market.
- Minus VAT on your margin (margin scheme) or on the full price (VAT-qualifying car).
- Minus preparation, battery report, transport and warranty handling.
- Minus your target profit.
What remains is your maximum bid. MyCarDealer calculates this from live listings and shows in which country the same MG sells for more; you can try it with a free valuation. For the wider brand picture, see our guide to MG cars on the used market and used electric cars for dealers.
Frequently asked questions
Are MG electric vehicles good?
They are good value. The MG4 in particular is a well-rounded electric hatchback with rear-wheel drive and a choice of battery sizes. Weak points are software bugs, cheap interior trim and 12-volt battery drain, not the battery or motors.
Is MG a petrol car brand?
MG sells petrol, full hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars in Europe. The ZS is available both as a petrol car and as the ZS EV, and the MG4 is electric only.
Does the MG warranty transfer to the next owner?
Yes. The 7-year / 150,000 km warranty on MGs sold from 2021 transfers to each new owner until it expires, provided the servicing conditions are met. Early ZS EVs sold before 2021 may have shorter cover.
Why do MG EVs depreciate quickly?
Low new prices, frequent discounts and many near-identical cars returning from leasing push used values down. Every new-car price cut lowers the value of used cars of the same model.
What should I check on a used ZS EV?
Start with the battery version, since the early 44.5 kWh car has much less range than the 72.6 kWh Long Range. Then check battery health, AC and DC charging, the 12-volt battery, tyres and suspension and the infotainment.
