MG cars on the used market: ZS, HS and MG3 for dealers
MG cars on the used market: ZS, HS plug-in and MG3 hybrid demand, warranty, build quality and how MG residual values compare.
· 7 min read
MG cars are budget stock that sells on price, equipment and warranty, not on brand image. For dealers, the petrol ZS, the HS and its plug-in hybrid version and the MG3 Hybrid+ can turn quickly if you buy them clearly below the trade value of comparable Kias and Dacias. Their residual values are low, so the profit is made at purchase, not at sale.
Is MG a British or Chinese car brand?
MG is a British brand by origin and a Chinese one by ownership. It started as Morris Garages in Oxford in the 1920s and has belonged to SAIC Motor, one of China's largest carmakers, since 2007. Today's MG cars are designed with input from MG's UK studio but engineered and built mainly in China.
For buyers this is less of an issue than it was. Many private customers now judge MG on price and warranty. Some, especially older buyers, still ask the question, and a clear answer helps: modern MGs are SAIC products with a long manufacturer's warranty and a growing European dealer network.
Which MG cars sell on the used market?
The MG cars that matter for used stock are the ZS small SUV, the HS family SUV with its plug-in hybrid version (sold in many markets as the EHS) and the MG3 supermini with the Hybrid+ powertrain. Electric MGs are covered in our separate MG electric car buying guide.
| Model | Powertrains on the used market | Who buys it |
|---|---|---|
| MG3 | Hybrid+ full hybrid (2024 on); older petrol MG3 in some markets | First-car and budget buyers who want an automatic hybrid |
| ZS | 1.0 turbo and 1.5 petrol; Hybrid+ from 2024 | Older buyers, small families, high-seat seekers |
| HS | 1.5 turbo petrol | Families who want space for the money |
| HS plug-in / EHS | Plug-in hybrid | Company-car drivers and buyers with home charging |
The full hybrids and petrol cars are not subject to the EU's countervailing duties on Chinese-built electric cars, which apply to battery-electric vehicles only. That is one reason MG has pushed hybrids hard, and why the used market is filling up with young MG3 and ZS hybrids.
For car dealers
Know your margin before you buy
MyCarDealer compares any car from an auction or listing with the market in your country and shows the net margin after VAT, transport and costs – and the maximum bid.
Request accessHow fast do MG cars lose value?
MG cars lose value faster than mainstream rivals because they are sold new with low list prices and frequent discounts, and buyers of used cars compare them with what a new MG costs today. The positive side for dealers is that they are cheap to buy at auction and in trade.
According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in October 2026, median asking prices in the European countries we follow were:
| Model | Years | Listings | Median price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG3 Hybrid+ | 2024–2025 | 384 | €16,980 | 16,000 km |
| ZS petrol | 2021–2023 | 375 | €13,750 | 50,200 km |
| HS petrol | 2020–2023 | 239 | €16,499 | 58,200 km |
| HS plug-in hybrid (EHS) | 2021–2023 | 535 | €18,490 | 69,600 km |
Country differences are large:
- MG3 Hybrid+: Czechia €19,407 and the Netherlands €18,945, against €16,780 in Germany, €16,454 in Spain, €16,657 in Poland and €15,990 in Italy.
- ZS petrol: Belgium €14,500 and Czechia €14,221, against €12,999 in Italy and €12,900 in Spain.
- HS petrol: Poland €18,178, against €15,699 in Italy and €15,490 in Spain.
- HS plug-in: Belgium €20,599 and the Netherlands €19,900, against €17,500 in Germany and €15,600 in Italy.
Italy and Spain are consistently the cheapest places in this data. For a dealer in Belgium, the Netherlands or Czechia, a €2,000–4,000 gap on a uniform car with a pan-European warranty is worth a transport bill, as long as the comparison is like for like.
Are used MG cars reliable?
Used MG cars are generally reliable in the mechanical sense; the complaints concern infotainment, interior quality and dealer support more than engines and gearboxes. The cars are relatively simple, and many are still under warranty.
Points to check on any used MG:
- Warranty remaining. MGs sold new in Europe from 1 January 2021 carry a 7-year / 150,000 km manufacturer's warranty that transfers to the next owner. It is one of your best sales arguments, so confirm the start date.
- Service history, because warranty cover depends on servicing to MG's schedule.
- Infotainment and cameras, which can be slow or freeze; ask whether software updates have been done.
- 12-volt battery on hybrids and plug-ins that have stood for weeks.
- Interior wear on seats and plastics, which shows earlier than on Korean rivals.
- On plug-ins, the charging cable, AC charging test and the behaviour of the hybrid system when the battery is empty.
Is the MG HS plug-in hybrid a good used buy?
The MG HS plug-in hybrid is a good used buy for a dealer when you buy it at a price that reflects its plug-in-specific risks: battery condition, charging hardware and a buyer pool that needs to be able to charge at home. It offers a lot of space and equipment for the money, and many were company cars with full service records.
Its weakness is the same as every plug-in hybrid: if the buyer never charges it, it is a heavy petrol SUV with modest fuel economy. Sell it to buyers with home charging and explain how to use it. Our guide to plug-in hybrid remarketing covers pricing and buyer selection in more detail.
Do buyers trust the MG brand?
Buyers increasingly trust MG, mainly because of the long warranty and the price-to-equipment ratio. MG has become a common sight in many European markets, which makes buyers less nervous about parts and service.
Trust varies by customer group:
- Young and budget buyers look at price, equipment and monthly payment, and accept MG easily.
- Older and rural buyers ask about the nearest workshop and parts and sometimes prefer Kia, Hyundai or Dacia.
- Company-car and leasing returns sell well when they come with full records.
Price MG cars below an equivalent Dacia Duster or Kia, not at the same level. The value argument only works if the gap is visible in the advert. See our guides to used Dacia cars and used Kia cars for the benchmarks you will be compared with.
How to buy and price MG cars for stock
Buy MG cars on current market data, because their values move with new-car offers. A practical routine:
- Check today's listings for the same model, engine and year in your own country.
- Compare with discounted new and pre-registered cars, which compete directly with one- and two-year-old MGs.
- Calculate your maximum bid backwards from realistic retail price, minus VAT, preparation, transport and profit.
- Look abroad when your own market is expensive; Italy and Spain often have lower prices.
MyCarDealer does this in one step: it values the car from live listings in your country and shows your margin after VAT and costs. You can try it with a free valuation.
Frequently asked questions
Are MG cars any good?
They offer a lot of equipment, space and warranty for the money, and the mechanical side is generally reliable. Weak points are interior quality, infotainment software and lower resale values than mainstream European and Korean rivals.
Is MG a British or Chinese car?
MG began as a British brand, Morris Garages, but has been owned by China's SAIC Motor since 2007. Today's MGs are designed partly in the UK and engineered and built mainly in China.
What is the drawback of MG cars?
The main drawback for owners and dealers is low residual value: MGs lose value faster than most rivals because new prices are low and discounts frequent. Cabin quality and the density of the service network also lag behind established brands.
Why are MG cars so cheap to buy?
SAIC prices MG aggressively to win market share and builds the cars at scale in China. Used MGs are cheap because they follow those low new prices and the frequent discounts on top.
Is the MG HS plug-in hybrid a good used buy?
Yes, for buyers who can charge at home, and if you buy it cheaply enough. Check the battery, the charging cable and AC charging, and sell it with clear advice on how to use the electric range.
