Mercedes OM651 engine problems: 2.1 CDI guide for dealers

Mercedes OM651 engine problems in the C, E, Sprinter and Vito: injectors, timing chain, coolant leaks and emissions parts, and how to price them.

· 7 min read

The best-known Mercedes OM651 engine problems are failing Delphi piezo injectors on early 220 CDI and 250 CDI versions, timing-chain stretch caused by worn tensioners, coolant leaks at the cylinder head and water pump, and wear in the EGR, turbo and particulate filter. The 2.1 CDI can cover high mileages, but these points decide whether a car or van is worth your bid.

Which Mercedes models use the OM651 engine?

The OM651 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel was Mercedes' main diesel from around 2008 until it was gradually replaced by the 2.0-litre OM654 from 2016 onwards. It was fitted to a very wide range of cars and vans.

Model Typical badges Approximate OM651 period
C Class W204 / W205 C 200 CDI, C 220 CDI, C 250 CDI, C 220 d 2008–2018
E Class W212 E 200 CDI, E 220 CDI, E 250 CDI, E 220 d 2009–2016
GLK, GLC, ML/GLE, GLA, A/B Class 220 d versions 220 CDI, 250 CDI, 220 d, 250 d Varies by model
Sprinter (906 series) 213–316 CDI and similar Until the 2018 model change
Vito / Viano, V Class 109–119 CDI, V 200 d / V 250 d Varies by model

Mercedes badges do not tell you the engine directly, so check the engine code in the vehicle documents or with a VIN decoder. The same badge can hide an OM651 before a model update and an OM654 after it.

What was the OM651 injector problem?

The OM651 injector problem was a high failure rate of the Delphi piezo injectors fitted to the more powerful versions, mainly the 220 CDI and 250 CDI with twin turbos. Failing injectors cause rough running, vibration, misfires, higher fuel consumption and, in bad cases, a car that will not start.

In Germany alone, thousands of complaints were recorded about the 220 CDI and 250 CDI. Mercedes replaced the piezo injectors with conventional solenoid injectors; sources date the switch to between 2010 and 2012, depending on the version. Lower-powered versions used solenoid injectors from the start.

What this means for buying:

  1. On a 220 CDI or 250 CDI from 2008–2012, ask whether the injectors have been replaced, and when.
  2. A full set of solenoid injectors fitted under a Mercedes campaign or by a specialist is a plus, not a minus.
  3. If the car still has its original piezo injectors, deduct the cost of a set from your bid.

Does the OM651 suffer timing chain stretch?

Yes, timing-chain stretch is a recognised OM651 problem, usually caused by a defective or worn chain tensioner rather than the chain alone. A stretched chain changes the valve timing and can, if ignored, jump teeth and damage the engine.

Symptoms and checks:

  • Rattle or crackling for a few seconds on a cold start, especially after the car has stood overnight.
  • Camshaft or crankshaft correlation fault codes in the engine control unit.
  • History of tensioner replacement. The tensioner was revised several times, so a newer part is a good sign.

Mercedes also recalled more than 100,000 vehicles in Germany built between February and November 2014 because sealing rings on the chain tensioner could leak oil. Check that this and other campaigns have been carried out for the VIN.

Other Mercedes OM651 engine problems: coolant, EGR, turbo and emissions

Beyond injectors and the chain, the OM651's usual problems are coolant leaks, carbon build-up, EGR and turbo wear and particulate filter issues. Most are the price of a high-mileage modern diesel rather than design faults.

Weak point Symptoms Comment
Coolant leaks at cylinder-head connections Falling coolant level, sweet smell Mercedes issued a service measure for the fittings
Water pump seal Coolant loss at higher mileage Replace as preventive work on high-mileage engines
EGR valve and cooler Limp mode, fault codes, black smoke Worse on cars used for short trips
Turbochargers Lack of power, whistling Twin-turbo versions have two to check
Diesel particulate filter Frequent regenerations, warning light Ask about recent cleaning or replacement
Carbon deposits Rough idle, loss of power Severe cases need mechanical cleaning

Many OM651 cars and vans were also subject to mandatory emissions software updates in Germany. Owners sometimes report slightly higher consumption afterwards. For resale, what matters is that the update has been done and documented. Our guide to AdBlue faults in used diesels covers the SCR systems fitted to many Euro 6 OM651 versions.

OM651 vans: Sprinter and Vito

OM651 vans are a large part of the commercial market, and their high mileage makes the engine checks even more important. Vans often run long distances with heavy loads, which is good for particulate filters but hard on clutches, turbos and chains.

According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, France, Austria and Spain in October 2026:

Model and years Listings Median asking price Median mileage
Sprinter diesel, 2016–2018 242 €15,499 213,000 km
Vito diesel, 2016–2019 480 €17,000 159,000 km
C Class diesel, 2015–2018 789 €15,750 161,000 km

The Sprinter at a median of 213,000 km shows how far these engines are expected to go. In Germany, 135 Sprinters had a median of €13,999, against €16,698 for 30 vans in Belgium and €15,400 for 29 in Italy. Vitos asked €16,290 in Germany (227 listings) and €19,300 in the Netherlands (57 listings). Our guide to van auctions explains where dealers source these vehicles.

How should OM651 history change my buying price?

OM651 history should change your buying price by the cost of the work that has not yet been done. A car with documented injectors, tensioner and coolant work is worth more than an identical one without, and the difference can be larger than many dealers assume.

A practical approach:

  1. Identify the engine version (power, year, injector type).
  2. List the known jobs: injectors, chain and tensioner, water pump, EGR, particulate filter.
  3. Tick off what the history covers. For each missing item on a car at the mileage where it typically fails, deduct a realistic repair cost.
  4. Add normal preparation: service, tyres, brakes, cosmetic work.
  5. Compare with the market price of the same version in your country.

For example, a 2011 C 250 CDI with 220,000 km, original piezo injectors and no record of tensioner work needs two deductions that a 2016 C 220 d with the same mileage and full history does not. Two cars that look similar in a listing can have very different maximum bids.

MyCarDealer gives you the market price of comparable cars in your country and calculates the margin after VAT on the margin, transport and preparation, so you can add your OM651 deductions and see the bid that still works. Frequently asked questions

Which Mercedes models use the OM651 engine?

The OM651 2.1 diesel was used in the C Class, E Class, GLK, GLC and many other cars, as well as the Sprinter and Vito vans, from around 2008 until it was replaced by the OM654 from 2016 onwards. Check the engine code, not just the badge.

What was the OM651 injector problem?

The 220 CDI and 250 CDI versions used Delphi piezo injectors that failed often, causing rough running and misfires. Mercedes switched to solenoid injectors between about 2010 and 2012, depending on version.

Does the OM651 suffer timing chain stretch?

Yes. A worn or defective chain tensioner can let the chain stretch, which shows as rattling on a cold start. Ask whether the tensioner has been replaced, and check recall status.

Is the Mercedes C Class 2.1 diesel reliable?

The C Class 2.1 diesel is generally durable, and many cars and vans with this engine are advertised with well over 200,000 km, provided the injectors, tensioner and cooling system have been looked after. Early twin-turbo versions with original piezo injectors are the main risk.

How should OM651 history change my buying price?

Deduct the cost of each known job that is due by mileage and not covered by the history, such as injectors, tensioner or water pump. A fully documented engine justifies a higher bid.
