Mercedes-Benz C Class W204 problems: rust, ESL and diesels
Mercedes-Benz C Class W204 problems: rust spots, steering lock failures, OM651 injectors and what an older C Class needs before resale.
· 8 min read
The main Mercedes-Benz C Class W204 problems are rust on the rear wheel arches, door bottoms and boot lid, failures of the electronic steering lock that stop the car from starting, and injector and timing-chain wear on the OM651 2.1 diesel. A W204 with these points checked is still sensible budget stock, but one without history can lose its margin in a single repair.
Mercedes-Benz C Class W204 problems and prices at a glance
The W204 C Class was built from 2007 to 2014, with a facelift in 2011 that brought a new interior and updated engines. It replaced the W203 (2000–2007) and was followed by the W205.
For dealers, the W204 is now budget and export stock. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, France, Austria and Spain in October 2026:
| C Class, model years | Listings | Median asking price | Middle half of prices | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel, 2010–2014 | 541 | €6,999 | €4,900–9,900 | 231,600 km |
| Petrol, 2008–2014 | 463 | €8,950 | €6,200–12,450 | 184,020 km |
Most diesels are high-mileage ex-company cars, while petrol supply is concentrated in the Netherlands, where 342 of the 463 petrol listings were found (median €8,800). In Germany, 220 diesel W204-era cars had a median of €6,900, in Belgium 127 cars a median of €5,900 and in Italy 105 cars a median of €7,799.
Where does the W204 C Class rust?
The W204 rusts mainly on the rear wheel arches, the bottom edges of the doors, the boot lid around the number-plate lights and parts of the underbody. It is much better than the W203, but cars from road-salt countries can be badly affected by now.
What to check:
- Rear wheel arches: bubbling at the arch lip, often hidden under fresh paint that does not quite match.
- Door bottoms and seals: water collects if drain holes are blocked.
- Boot lid: corrosion around the number-plate light and handle trim.
- Underbody and subframes: surface rust is normal at this age; flaking or holes are not.
- Jacking points and sills: damage from careless lifting starts corrosion.
Photographs in auction reports rarely show the underbody, so ask for extra pictures or an inspection. Cosmetic rust on the arches is a manageable bodyshop job; structural rust on a car worth €5,000 usually is not.

The electronic steering lock (ESL) problem is a failure of the motor-driven lock on the steering column, which then refuses to release. The symptoms are a key that turns in the ignition without anything happening, no unlock click, a locked steering wheel and, in some cases, no dashboard lights.
The issue is widely reported on the W204 and related Mercedes models of the same period. Points to know:
- Rule out the battery first. A weak battery can produce intermittent steering-lock symptoms. Test with a charged battery before diagnosing the lock.
- The proper repair is a new lock with coding. It is usually done by a Mercedes dealer or specialist with the right equipment, and the price is significant for a car of this value.
- Emulators exist. Some independent workshops fit an emulator that bypasses the lock. Mercedes does not recommend this, and buyers may question it, so disclose it if the car you sell has one.
Ask the seller whether the steering lock has been replaced. A documented replacement makes the car more attractive.
Are W204 diesels reliable at high mileage?
W204 diesels can cover very high mileages, but the OM651 2.1 engine in the C 200 CDI, C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI has specific weak points that matter more as the kilometres pile up. Early cars before about 2009 used the older OM646 2.2 diesel, which has its own injector-seal issues.
The key OM651 checks:
- Piezo injectors: the C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI used Delphi piezo injectors that failed frequently, causing rough running, misfires and higher consumption. Mercedes changed to solenoid injectors from around 2010 to 2012, depending on version.
- Timing chain and tensioner: a stretched chain from a worn tensioner shows as rattling on a cold start. Left alone it can cause engine damage.
- Coolant leaks: from pipe connections at the cylinder head and, at high mileage, from the water pump.
- Emissions parts: EGR valve, diesel particulate filter and turbo deserve attention on cars with lots of short trips.
Many W204 diesels also received mandatory emissions software updates. They rarely change the value, but a car with all recalls done is easier to register and sell. For a deeper look, read our OM651 engine problems guide.
W203 and W204 petrol engines and gearboxes
The petrol W204 is generally less troublesome than the diesel, but the 1.8 Kompressor and early V6 engines have their own known issues. Gearbox faults add to the list on automatic cars.
- M271 1.8 Kompressor (C 180 / C 200): earlier versions, also used in the W203, are known for timing-chain wear. Listen for rattle on start-up.
- M272 V6 (C 230, C 280, C 350): some early engines suffered balance-shaft gear wear. Most affected engines predate the W204, but check the engine number with a specialist.
- Automatic gearboxes: the 7G-Tronic in many W204s can suffer conductor-plate failures that cause limp mode. See our guide to C Class automatic gearbox problems.
Owners of a W203 should expect more rust than on a W204, particularly on early cars, as well as electrical faults that are typical for cars of that age.
Is a W204 still worth buying for stock today?
A W204 is still worth buying for stock if you buy it cheaply, choose a petrol or a well-documented diesel, and sell it into a market that values a reliable Mercedes at this price level. It works less well as stock for cities with low-emission zones, where Euro 5 diesels are restricted.
When a W204 makes sense:
- Clean facelifted cars (2011–2014) with full history, especially petrols and estates.
- Diesels with injector and chain work documented, priced for their mileage.
- Export and regional markets where buyers prefer older premium cars to newer budget brands.
When to pass:
- Structural rust or bodywork patched up to hide it.
- A steering lock that fails intermittently on the test drive.
- Diesels with misfires, chain noise or smoke and no history.
Older diesels face their own demand problem in some cities. Our article on diesel values and low-emission zones explains which markets are affected.
How to price an older C Class correctly
Price an older C Class by starting from the market price of comparable cars in your country, then deducting the reconditioning and risk that the specific car carries. At these values, a single repair can be bigger than your entire margin.
A worked example: a 2012 C 220 CDI estate with 240,000 km is advertised nearby at around €7,000. Your planned retail price is €7,000. Typical preparation (service, tyres, brakes and arch repair) costs €900, and the injectors have never been replaced. You deduct €1,000 as an injector risk and want €1,000 profit. Under the margin scheme, VAT is due only on the difference between buying and selling price, at your own country's rate. For a German dealer at 19%, the maximum purchase price is about €3,550: the gross margin of €3,450 minus €551 VAT and €1,900 for preparation and risk leaves €1,000.
MyCarDealer calculates the market price for the exact version and year in your country and the margin after VAT, transport and preparation, so you can check whether a W204 leaves room for repairs before you bid. Frequently asked questions
Where does the W204 C Class rust?
Mainly on the rear wheel arches, door bottoms, boot lid around the number-plate lights and the underbody. Check under fresh paint on the arches, where rust is often hidden.
What is the electronic steering lock problem on the W204?
The electronic steering lock can fail to release, so the key turns but the car does not start and the steering stays locked. Rule out a weak battery first; the proper repair is a new coded lock.
Are W204 diesels reliable at high mileage?
They can be, if the known weak points of the OM651 have been addressed: injectors, timing chain and coolant leaks. A diesel with records of this work is a much safer buy than one without.
What are the main Mercedes C Class W203 problems?
The W203 is more prone to rust than the W204, especially early cars, and its 1.8 Kompressor petrol is known for timing-chain wear. Electrical faults are also common at this age, so check all functions carefully.
Is a W204 still worth buying for stock today?
Yes, if it is bought cheaply, has a clear history and is sold into a market that values a reliable older Mercedes. Avoid cars with structural rust, intermittent steering-lock faults or undocumented diesel problems.
