Mercedes C Class W205 problems: dealer checks and costs
Mercedes C Class W205 problems: air suspension, 9G-Tronic, OM654 AdBlue, C 350 e and C 300 h hybrid systems, and the checks to do before buying.
· 8 min read
The most common Mercedes C Class W205 problems are leaking AIRMATIC air springs, jerky shifting on early 9G-Tronic gearboxes, timing-chain and camshaft-adjuster issues on M274 petrols, AdBlue and NOx-sensor faults on OM654 diesels, and ageing high-voltage parts on the C 350 e plug-in hybrid. The W205 is still a solid used car; these are the points to check and price in.
W205 C Class at a glance
The W205 C Class was built from 2014 to 2021 as a saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet, with a facelift in 2018. The facelift matters most for dealers because it changed the main diesel engine.
| Period | Main diesel | Main petrols | Hybrids |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014–2018 | OM651 2.1 (C 200 d, C 220 d, C 250 d) | M274 1.6 and 2.0 | C 300 h diesel hybrid, C 350 e plug-in |
| 2018–2021 | OM654 2.0 (C 200 d, C 220 d, C 300 d) | M264 with 48-volt support, M274 on some versions | C 300 e petrol plug-in, C 300 de diesel plug-in |
The C 220 d went from the 2.1-litre OM651 with 170 hp to the aluminium 2.0-litre OM654 with 194 hp at the facelift. The OM654 is more modern and efficient, which is one reason facelifted cars hold a premium.
What are the common Mercedes C Class W205 problems?
The common W205 problems are concentrated in a few systems: suspension, gearbox, engine timing on petrols and emissions equipment on diesels. Body and interior quality are generally good, although air-conditioning evaporator leaks and suspension knocks are reported too.
| Problem | Affected versions | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| AIRMATIC air spring or compressor wear | Cars with air suspension, common on C 350 e | Car sits low after standing, compressor runs long, warning message |
| 9G-Tronic harsh or delayed shifts | Mainly 2014–2015 cars | Jerky changes, delay pulling away; often fixed by software |
| Timing chain and camshaft adjusters | M274 petrols | Rattle on cold start, oil leaks around the adjusters |
| AdBlue and NOx sensor faults | OM654 diesels and other Euro 6 diesels | Warning of a countdown to no-start, emissions fault codes |
| Injectors and chain tensioner | OM651 diesels | Rough running, rattle on cold start |
| Air-conditioning evaporator leak | All | Weak cooling, refrigerant loss |
| Front suspension noise | All | Knocks over bumps; worn bushes or links |
Air springs and compressors usually start to give trouble between about 60,000 and 120,000 km. Many 9G-Tronic complaints come at 50,000–70,000 km. Neither is a reason to walk away, but both are reasons to adjust your price.

Request accessDo W205 diesels have AdBlue problems?
Yes, W205 diesels with SCR exhaust treatment can suffer AdBlue system faults, mostly heaters, pumps, sensors and NOx sensors rather than the engine itself. When the system detects a fault, the car warns the driver and counts down the kilometres until it will no longer restart, so a fault has to be fixed before you can sell the car.
Checks before buying:
- Read the engine control unit for emissions-related fault codes, even if no warning is shown.
- Check the AdBlue level and whether the tank has been topped up recently; crystallisation around the filler hints at past leaks.
- Ask about earlier repairs to the SCR system and the diesel particulate filter.
- Check that mandatory emissions software updates for the vehicle have been carried out.
The OM651 cars from before the facelift have different risks: injectors, chain tensioner and coolant leaks. We cover them in our OM651 engine guide and AdBlue faults in general in our article on AdBlue faults in used diesels.
Is the C 350 e plug-in hybrid a risky used buy?
The C 350 e is riskier than a normal W205 because it adds a high-voltage battery, a charging system and, usually, air suspension to the usual list of checks. It can still be good stock, but only at a price that reflects these risks and in a market where buyers want a plug-in.
What to check on a C 350 e:
- Battery health and electric range. The battery is small, and buyers expect at least some electric driving. A test of the battery's state of health is worth doing; our EV battery health check guide explains the options.
- Charging. Test charging from a wallbox and a household socket, and make sure the charging cable is included.
- AIRMATIC. Check the ride height after the car has stood overnight.
- Warranty status. Check whether any manufacturer battery warranty still applies, and its conditions.
The diesel-hybrid C 300 h and later plug-ins (C 300 e, C 300 de) need the same extra checks of the hybrid system. On the C 300 h, the hybrid system is paired with the OM651, so the diesel checks apply too.
How fast does a W205 C Class depreciate?
A W205 loses value at a typical premium-car pace, with a clear step between pre-facelift and facelifted cars. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, France, Austria and Spain in October 2026:
| C Class | Listings | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel, 2015–2018 | 789 | €15,750 | 161,000 km |
| Diesel, 2018–2021 | 808 | €19,950 | 130,000 km |
| Hybrid, 2016–2020 | 153 | €18,899 | 136,000 km |
The difference of about €4,200 between the two diesel groups reflects age, mileage and the newer OM654 engine. Hybrids show the biggest spread between countries: 54 Belgian hybrids had a median of €11,850, against €18,450 for 57 in the Netherlands and €19,980 for 31 in Germany. Ex-company plug-ins in Belgium are often cheap to source, but check what buyers in your own market will pay before you buy them in volume. Our plug-in hybrid guide covers the demand side.
What to check before bidding on a W205
Check the history, the gearbox, the suspension and the emissions system before bidding on a W205. Most cars come from leasing and company fleets, so service records are often complete, but faults may have been left for the next owner.
- Service history. Confirm regular services and any gearbox software updates.
- Cold start. Listen for chain noise on M274 petrols and OM651 diesels.
- Gearbox. Look for harsh shifts, delays and stored transmission faults.
- Suspension. On AIRMATIC cars, check the ride height and listen for the compressor.
- Emissions. Scan for AdBlue, NOx sensor and particulate filter faults.
- Hybrid system. On plug-ins, test charging, electric drive and battery health.
- Recalls. Ask a Mercedes workshop to check open campaigns for the VIN.

How to price W205 stock
Price W205 stock by starting from the market price of the exact version, year and mileage in your country, then deducting preparation and the specific risks of that car. A C 220 d estate and a C 350 e saloon of the same year can sell at very different prices and speeds.
MyCarDealer finds comparable cars (same model, generation, engine and year ±2) in current listings in your country, calculates the weighted median price, and shows the margin after VAT on the margin, transport and preparation, along with the maximum bid at auction. You can value a car for free or request access to use it on your stock. For the bigger picture of the model's faults across generations, see our overview of Mercedes C Class problems.
Frequently asked questions
What are the common Mercedes C Class W205 problems?
The most common are air suspension leaks, harsh 9G-Tronic shifts on early cars, timing-chain and camshaft-adjuster issues on M274 petrols and AdBlue faults on newer diesels. Plug-in hybrids add battery and charging checks.
Is the C 350 e plug-in hybrid a risky used buy?
It is riskier than a conventional W205 because of the ageing high-voltage battery, the charging system and the air suspension. Bought at the right price and with a battery check, it can still sell well where buyers want plug-ins.
Do W205 diesels have AdBlue problems?
Euro 6 W205 diesels with AdBlue can develop faults in the heaters, pumps and NOx sensors. A fault triggers a countdown to a no-start, so it must be repaired before resale.
What problems does the Mercedes C Class hybrid have?
The C 300 h diesel hybrid and C 350 e plug-in share the usual W205 issues plus the hybrid system: battery ageing, charging faults and, on many plug-ins, air suspension. Diagnose the hybrid system before buying.
How fast does a W205 C Class depreciate?
In October 2026 listings, 2015–2018 diesels had a median asking price of €15,750 and 2018–2021 diesels €19,950. Hybrids vary most by country, with Belgian prices well below Dutch and German ones.
