Vehicle listing: how to write used car ads that sell
How to write a vehicle listing that sells: title, key specs, honest condition notes, equipment highlights and a structure buyers read on mobile.
· 7 min read
A vehicle listing that sells answers the buyer's questions in order: what car it is, what it costs, what condition it is in, and why this one. Use a precise title, put the key specs and price at the top, describe condition and wear honestly, highlight the equipment that matters for that model, and keep paragraphs short enough to read on a phone.
What should a good used car listing include?
A good used car listing includes everything a buyer needs to decide whether to call: exact model and engine, price, mileage, registration date, condition, equipment, history and how to buy. Missing information does not make buyers curious; it makes them scroll on.
| Field | What to write | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Make, model, engine, power, gearbox, key trim | Buyers filter and search by these |
| Price | Final price, with VAT status | Price is the first thing compared |
| First registration and mileage | Exact month/year and km | The two numbers every buyer checks |
| Service history | Full, partial, with dates | Builds trust immediately |
| Condition | Honest summary, known damage, tyres | Prevents wasted viewings |
| Equipment | 5–8 features that matter for this model | Differentiates from similar cars |
| Warranty | What you offer and for how long | Reduces perceived risk |
| VAT status | Margin scheme or VAT deductible | Important for business buyers |
| Location and contact | Address, opening hours, phone | Makes the next step easy |
Under the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive 2005/29/EC, a listing is misleading if it contains false information or deceives the average consumer about the main characteristics of the product, even when each statement is technically correct. In an invitation to purchase, the price including taxes is part of the material information the buyer must get. Mileage, accident history and condition belong in the same category of honesty.
How to write a vehicle listing title
The title is a search query in reverse: write it the way buyers search. Start with make and model, then engine and power, then the one or two features that most affect value.
A useful formula:
Make + Model + Engine + Power + Gearbox + Key trim or feature
Examples:
- Škoda Octavia Combi 2.0 TDI 110 kW DSG Style, LED, ACC
- Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI 96 kW Life, Navigation, Heated seats
- Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD, Heat pump, Battery report 91%
Avoid capitals, exclamation marks and vague words such as "top condition" or "must see". Portals often cut long titles on mobile, so put the important words first.

Request accessHow long should a vehicle description be?
A vehicle description should be long enough to answer the main questions and short enough to read in a minute: usually 120–250 words of text plus a list of equipment. Longer is fine if it is structured; walls of text are not.
A structure that works on mobile:
- Opening line: what makes this car worth a look (one sentence).
- Key facts: registration, mileage, engine, gearbox, service history.
- Condition: what is good, what is worn, what has been done.
- Equipment highlights: five to eight features, as a list.
- What the buyer gets: warranty, inspection, new service, two keys.
- How to buy: viewing, test drive, part exchange, finance, delivery.
Write in short sentences. Many buyers read on a phone between other things, and they skim.
How to describe damage and wear honestly
Describe damage plainly, with location and size, and say what you have done about it. Buyers forgive honest wear; they do not forgive surprises at the viewing.
Good practice:
- Be specific. "Small scratch on the rear bumper, about 5 cm" is better than "minor marks".
- Put it in context. "Normal stone chips on the bonnet for 140,000 km."
- Show it. Add a photo of each damage you mention.
- Say what was fixed. "Front bumper repaired by smart repair, new front tyres, brakes serviced."
- Do not hide accident history. If the car had structural repairs, say so.
An honest description filters out buyers who would walk away anyway and brings in buyers who have accepted the condition before they arrive. For how much to fix before listing, see our guide to reconditioning costs.
Templates by segment
Different buyers read for different things. A city car buyer cares about running costs; a premium buyer cares about specification and history.
| Segment | Lead with | Equipment to highlight |
|---|---|---|
| City car | Low running costs, easy parking, low insurance | Air conditioning, parking sensors, smartphone integration |
| Family estate or SUV | Space, safety, service history | Towbar, boot volume, isofix, adaptive cruise |
| Premium saloon | Specification and history | Engine, driver assistance, lights, seats, sound system |
| Electric car | Range and battery health | Battery report, heat pump, fast-charge power, cables |
| Van | Load space and condition | Payload, bulkhead, racking, service intervals |
For electric cars, the battery report is the single most important item in the listing; our EV battery health check guide explains what to show.
Do better photos and backgrounds really sell cars faster?
Better photos make buyers stop scrolling and click, and that is the first step to selling. The listing text only gets read if the photos earn the click.
A practical photo set:
- Front three-quarter view as the main photo.
- Side, rear three-quarter and rear views.
- Dashboard with the mileage visible, front seats, rear seats, boot.
- Wheels and tyres, close-ups of any damage you mention.
- Service book and battery report where relevant.
Shoot in even light, without other cars or clutter behind. A clean, consistent background across your stock makes your listings recognisable and hides a busy yard. Showroom-style backgrounds can be generated from ordinary photos, as long as the car itself is shown as it is; replacing the background is fine, retouching damage away is not.
Can AI write car listing descriptions?
Yes, AI can write a good first draft of a vehicle listing from the car's data, and it is useful for consistency across a large stock. A person still has to check every fact, especially equipment, condition and history.
AI is good at turning a list of features into readable sentences and keeping the same structure on every car. It is bad at knowing what is actually on the car: it can invent equipment that belongs to a higher trim. Always feed it the real data, read the output before publishing and add condition notes yourself.
MyCarDealer has a listing-text generator that writes descriptions from the car's data for €0.25 per text, and showroom photo backgrounds for €0.50 per photo, both from prepaid credit, available to verified dealers who request access. The texts and photos can be reused on portals and on your own car dealer website. Price matters as much as text, so check the asking price against the market too; our guide to used car pricing shows how.
Frequently asked questions
What should a good used car listing include?
A precise title, the price with VAT status, first registration and mileage, service history, an honest condition summary, the key equipment, warranty, and clear contact and viewing details. Add photos of every damage you mention.
How long should a vehicle description be?
Usually 120–250 words plus an equipment list is enough. Structure it in short sections: opening line, key facts, condition, equipment, what the buyer gets and how to buy. Buyers skim on mobile, so short sentences matter more than length.
How do I describe damage or wear honestly without scaring buyers?
Be specific about location and size, put the wear in context of age and mileage, show a photo and say what you have already repaired. Clear facts reassure serious buyers and filter out those who would walk away at the viewing.
Do better photos and backgrounds really sell cars faster?
Better photos increase the number of buyers who click on the listing, which is the first step to a sale. Consistent, uncluttered backgrounds make your stock look professional, as long as the car itself is shown honestly with any damage visible.
Can AI write car listing descriptions?
AI can write a solid first draft from the car's real data and keeps descriptions consistent across your stock. Always check equipment, condition and history before publishing, because AI tools can add features the car does not have.
