Volvo electric car used: XC40 Recharge, C40 and EX30 guide
Used Volvo electric car guide for dealers - XC40 Recharge, C40 and EX30 battery health, recalls, software, charging and real resale prices in Europe.

A used Volvo electric car is usually an XC40 Recharge (now called EX40), a C40 Recharge (now EC40) or an EX30. They are solid buys when the battery is healthy, software is current and recalls are done. The high-voltage battery has an 8-year/160,000 km Volvo warranty. In October 2026, a 2020–2023 XC40 electric was listed at a median of about €30,150 across Europe, roughly €6,400 above a petrol XC40.
Which Volvo electric cars are on the used market?
Volvo's fully electric range on the used market is still small, and the XC40 dominates it. Know the versions, because battery size and drive layout change both range and value.
| Model | From | Batteries | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| XC40 Recharge / EX40 | 2020 | 69 kWh (single motor), 78 kWh and later larger packs (twin motor, extended range) | Single motor was front-wheel drive until the 2024 model year, then rear-wheel drive |
| C40 Recharge / EC40 | 2021 | As XC40 | Coupé-style roof, electric only |
| EX30 | 2023–2024 | 51 kWh LFP or 69 kWh NMC | Small SUV; built in China, and in Ghent, Belgium from 2025 |
| XC90 / EX90 and others | 2024– | Large packs | Very few used cars yet |
In 2024 Volvo renamed the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge to EX40 and EC40. The cars are the same family, so compare like with like by year, battery and motor rather than by name.
The rear-wheel-drive single-motor update for the 2024 model year brought more power and efficiency, so a later single-motor car is worth more than an early front-wheel-drive one with the same mileage.
How reliable is a used XC40 Recharge?
The XC40 Recharge has no major known mechanical weak points; most reported issues are software and electrical. Typical complaints are infotainment freezes, phone connectivity drops, app connection problems and occasional warning messages that clear after an update. A weak 12-volt battery causes many "random" faults on any modern EV, including this one.
The infotainment uses a Google-based system with over-the-air updates. When you take a car into stock, check that the latest software is installed and that the previous owner's account has been removed.

Request accessWhat should I check on a used C40 or XC40?
Use the same routine for the C40 and XC40:
- Battery state of health. Get a report from a Volvo dealer or a specialist. Note the usable capacity and any cell imbalance.
- Range test. Charge to 100% and compare the displayed range with similar cars, allowing for temperature.
- DC fast charging. Test at a rapid charger and note the charging power at a mid state of charge.
- Software and recalls. Ask a Volvo dealer for the software version and open campaigns.
- Charging cables and app. Both cables present, car released from the old account.
- Tyres and brakes. EVs are heavy and fast-accelerating; tyres wear quickly, while brake discs can corrode from little use.
Our EV battery health check guide explains how to read the results.
Is the EX30 a good used buy?
The EX30 can be a good used buy, but check the battery version and recall status first. The EX30 uses two chemistries: a 51 kWh LFP battery in the base single-motor car and a 69 kWh NMC battery in the extended-range and twin-motor versions.
Volvo recalled large numbers of 69 kWh EX30s worldwide because cell modules could overheat at high charge levels, creating a fire risk. The 51 kWh LFP version was not affected. Owners of affected cars were advised to limit charging until the fix was done. Ask a Volvo dealer to confirm the recall work by VIN before you buy, and record it in the sales file.
Owners also report software glitches with phone integration and connectivity. Most are fixed by updates.
How fast do Volvo EVs depreciate?
Volvo EVs typically lose more value in euros than petrol Volvos because they cost more when new, but the used premium over petrol is still clear. According to listings tracked by MyCarDealer across 18 European countries in October 2026, 2020–2023 XC40s had these median asking prices:
| XC40, 2020–2023 | Listings | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric (Recharge) | 451 | €30,153 | 68,000 km |
| Plug-in hybrid | 456 | €27,336 | 89,123 km |
| Petrol | 917 | €23,750 | 78,371 km |
The electric XC40 was most common in Norway (106 listings, median €32,526), the Netherlands (95, €28,900) and Sweden (78, €29,918), with Germany at €32,850 (28 listings) and Belgium at €29,445 (30). Petrol XC40s were cheapest in Belgium (175 listings, €21,900) and highest among large markets in Germany (61, €26,790).
The figures show two things. First, EVs from the Netherlands and Sweden are often cheaper than in Germany, which creates sourcing opportunities within the EU. Second, Norway has the most used EV supply, but it is outside the EU, so importing involves customs formalities; our guide to used electric cars from Norway explains them.
Warranty: what transfers to the next owner?
Volvo's standard warranty for the high-voltage battery is 8 years or 160,000 km from first registration, and it stays with the car. Check the first registration date and mileage to calculate remaining cover.
In Germany, Volvo introduced an extended battery guarantee for certified used electrified cars from July 2026. According to reports on the scheme, eligible Volvo Selekt cars up to 5 years old and 150,000 km, with full service history and a state-of-health certificate, receive cover that can extend total battery protection to up to 11 years. It is available through Volvo dealers' certified used programme, not to independent dealers, but it sets a benchmark that buyers will compare you with.
How to price used Volvo EVs against petrol stock
Price a used Volvo EV against the same model, battery and year in your own market, then compare it with the petrol and plug-in alternatives your buyer is considering. A battery report, full charging cables and remaining warranty all support a higher price.
For sourcing across borders, add transport, check the VAT status of the purchase and any registration tax in your country. A free valuation shows the local market price and your net margin before you bid. For a sister brand built on similar technology, see our Polestar 2 used guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are Volvo electric cars any good?
Yes. The XC40 Recharge and C40 have a good record, with most issues being software-related and fixable by updates. Battery health, recall status and remaining warranty are the key checks on a used car.
Is Polestar Swedish or Chinese?
Polestar is a Swedish brand based in Gothenburg that started as Volvo's performance arm. It is controlled by Geely, the Chinese group that also owns Volvo Cars, and its cars have mainly been built in China.
Is the Volvo EX30 worth buying?
It can be, especially the 51 kWh LFP version, which was not affected by the battery recall. For the 69 kWh version, confirm the recall work has been done before buying.
Does Volvo have a fully electric car?
Yes. Volvo's fully electric models include the EX30, EX40 (formerly XC40 Recharge), EC40 (formerly C40 Recharge) and EX90, with further models added recently. On the used market, the XC40 Recharge is by far the most common.
